Warning: This review may contain spoilers. I decided to read this book because in a way, it was sort of a continuation of Alex Flinn's fairy tale series. I was interested in the first part of the story, because it was a simple fairy tale at that point. It even reminded me of " Ella Enchanted ". But when Jack was introduced in the 21st century, things started getting messy fast. I didn't like this particular modernized re-telling of the famous "The Sleeping Beauty". Flinn does have good ideas for modernized re-tellings of fairy tales, but I feel like she doesn't do it well. Her ideas are good, but the way she conveys her thoughts to writing? Not the best. " A Kiss in Time " was confusing and felt too 'modern'. I'd take works written by Gail Carson Levine over this. Nevertheless, Flinn did make me interested in books that re-tell fairy tales.
I enjoyed it, sure... I guess I was just late to the party and didn't see what everyone was raving about.

What I actually just read is Book 2 only: Chamber of Secrets. Regret that it is the US edition, as I would prefer the original text with its 'Britishisms'. But this is Karin's copy and she has the whole set in the US edition. I enjoyed this a lot. I think DOBBY is the invention of a genius. Intriguing character. My only criticism is the completely stereotyped nagging-housewife character of Mrs Weasley. Most unbelievable in someone with her powers. What was Rowling thinking??? [or have I missed some subtlety?:] Now [mid April:] I have read the third volume, HP and the prisoner of Azkaban. Enjoyed this book too. Less emphasis on weak women in this book... Again, I like how Rowling makes characters not completely black or white. In the first place, one doesn't know on first acquaintance whether the person will turn out to be a friend or an enemy, and sometimes it remains mixed. Students trust teachers, but sometimes discover a teacher is untrustworthy, or only partly so. And sometimes a hero [like the head of the school:] turns out to have limitations on what he can do. This is a more accurate reflection of real life than the 'good guy bad guy' approach, so I like that.
I am reading this online using DailyLit. Since it is a Classic I assume it is going to get better! March 31 Happy to report that this is getting more and more interesting. I am really beginning to care about the characters. That is the key for me to enjoy any story. If I care about the people the plot is less important.
Dress code: aristocratic, but threadbare; velvet bows encouraged.

that's jast and jast for fan! jast and nothings
Fascinating, well-written book that divides human history into six eras - Beer, Wine, Liquor, Coffee, Tea, and Cola (specifically of the Coca kind). Standage lets the story unfold almost like a novel, with fresh, witty observations showing up next to enthralling facts and history. The book really does showcase how essential these six beverages were to the development of society and human existence as we know it. Even better - he comes full circle and hypothesizes that water is and will be the next huge drink that changes the course of history. One of the best books I've read in the past year, if not my life.

Excellent
Interesting story but also kind of dull throughout.

Very touching and heartfelt-cheesy at times, but a beautiful message for his grandson to take with him forever.
