This book allows you to witness the grace, energy and intellect Maxine McKew marshalled to defeat John Howard during the last election.

I got a little irritated with the Wee Free Men's accents (not to mention their absurdly long names). But otherwise the story kept me amused. And the accents were comprehensible (unlike Little Lord Fauntleroy and Huckleberry Finn, in which I found the accents occasionally incomprehensible, distractingly stilted bits of dialogue that I tended to skip over). Pratchett kind of reminds me of Douglas Adams: a kind of self-conscious, tongue-in-cheek fantasy (or science-fiction, in the case of Adams) writer who doesn't let the snarkiness get in the way of creating an absorbing story (and in fact uses it to increase the believability of the worlds being created....unlike Gaiman who seems to detract from his stories with his self-consciousness).

This completely threw me for a loop. It starts off as a series of gross-out humor adventures but then suddenly veers toward a grisly climax and depressing end. The only things I can think to compare this to is Bridge to Terabithia and -to a very slight degree- Crime and Punishment. Definitely an odd book. Van Draanen is defintely one of my favorite kid/YA writers.

I saw the film before I read the book, and took heed of those who said the book was nothing like the movie version. Whilst this is true, it also is very similar. I feel as though when someone decided to make this into a film they realised that there were way too many characters in the book, and narrowed them down to make it easier to watch. There’s no story in the book, it is simply a navigation through research by Jon. So, to the content itself. I love the stuff about goats and the walking through walls, and the general conspiracy theories that are presented throughout. It’s difficult to read some of the items about torture, and particularly the thoughts on why some of the pictures and things have come out. The book seems to veer from ridiculous to really seriously very quickly, and it’s sometimes hard to work out what you’re meant to be feeling about what you’re reading. There are hard-hitting paragraphs, and some that make you feel guilty as a human being. But then there are the moments that are almost laugh out loud and that puts you at ease enough to continue reading. It wasn’t easy to get through, but the writing was good and the content was strong. I might have to watch the film again. Any excuse.
I loved this very conversational book by Rob Bell. He unpacks some "myths" that the church sometimes gets wrapped up in and meanwhile asks people to jump into their faith understanding it is a relationship and not a series of facts to know. Lifechanging book. So good.

I received a copy of this book via the giveaways here on Goodreads, and I have to say, this book was excellent! The characters were interesting, the story was compelling, and I even liked the bad guys. The main character was someone you could relate to, even if he is over 2,000 years old. I can't believe this is a debut author as it reads so well. I recommend everyone who likes urban fantasy and a good, fun, fast read pick up this book. I really look forward to the other 2 books set in this universe due out soon!

I loved it but I have seen just about every episode and read almost every book he has written. Someone who hasn't could still appreciate the photos, but a background knowledge of at least the show would help!

Corrie ten Boom and her sister were two 50 something 'spinsters' living with their father in Haarlem, Holland during WWII. Their devout Christianity impelled them to hide Jews in their tiny house. I think this is one of the most meaningful books I've ever read.

3.5 stars. This book was intense and so freaking different in it's paranormal aspect. I really enjoyed it.

I think this may be the first adult mystery that I ever read, having recently graduated from the Nancy Drew school of suspense. It scared the bejesus out of me! I will forever more eschew invitations to mysterious mansions by anonymous hosts!
