After reading both of Tori's books and watching her show, I wanted to see Candy's reaction to Tori's comments/stories about her childhood. Really though, there is no point to read Candy's book. She barely discusses her children. **Possible Spoilers** Here is what I did learn: her house is 56,500 sf; her attic at The Manor is 17,000 (with a salon; she is down sizing to a 17,000 sf condo (what will she do???); her husband, Aaron, was the king of ABC in the mid-80s - one third of their prime time in the mid-80s was made up of Aaron's shows; she has every script from every episode of every show Aaron worked on; she has a lot of collections; she buys her window cleaner from the 99 cent store. There are many other inane comments. Candy did retell a couple of stories that Tori discusses. One is the Marie Antoinette Halloween costume. Candy swears Tori loved it when she wore it; but now Tori has rewritten history. The dolls... Tori discusses the Madame Alexander dolls her mother gave her, but Tori was never allowed to play with. Candy says Tori loved those dolls, then one day she stopped loving them. So Candy has them in her doll museum. (OK, a doll museum? And Candy designed dolls? I'm going to give the truth of this story to Tori! Her mom loved the dolls.) The sad part is, you can tell Candy wants a relationship with Tori and her grandchildren. However, writing such in a book that Tori may or may not read is silly. Also, writing an open letter to the grandchildren? Pointless. Also sad, Candy ever showed any growth as a human. Apparently she was the same as a child as she is as an adult. Disappointing was that Candy never discussed Aaron's passing. She talks about how much they loved each other, so one would assume that would have been a crucial moment in Candy's life. Perhaps she was holding back for the next book. Anyway, read the book if you like. But don't expect too much.
A lovely collection of watercolors and poetry.
Great book to help you understand real property law. It can be really BORING if you are not in law school, lawyer or have some interest in real estate. It was a resource I used while in school.

Hard to rate this one. While it contains a major statement of Nee's theology, it is so poorly presented that the reader has trouble staying with it--let alone understanding what Nee expounds. His thesis: "Faith is the principle by which we receive life, while submission is the principle by which we conduct our living." He faults moderns Christians for, at best, pursuing external compliance with divine rule, while not submitting to divine rule. The rest this book is so opaque stems from its origin as a series of teaching Nee made in the 1940s. The present manuscript was based on notes of admitted "inadequacy." Also, presenting information orally is very different from written communication. This text is fraught with the repetitions and summaries necessary of a teaching. Lastly, of course, changes in language (not to mention translation) leave the current prose stiff and archaic. So, five stars for the thoughts and three for the text.

This book gave me heavy boots (which is also my favorite new phrase). One of those books that you can't put down but when you do, it's so hard to pick it back up. So sad but I didn't want it to end.

I really wanted to like this book, but couldn't help thinking (to the author): "Quit whining. You're in Italy/India/Bali. Get over him already. Go out and enjoy yourself for crying out loud."

Tolkien set the bar for fantasy storytelling with Lord of the Rings. Since its publication, every author in the genre must address it in some way, how their work is different, how it is the same, etc. The story's merit doesn't lie in the prose but rather in the remarkable world-creating that is on display. Several languages were created, an entire geography, several cultures and their histories, etc. Tolkien himself has stated that the book is not an allegory, but it certainly can be read as a reminder of the horrors of war and blind obsession, and of the impossibility of the death of hope.
Like a well tailored suit.
