I really enjoyed Bridge of Birds (the first book in this "series" of books about Master Li & Number Ten Ox) and so I was excited to read this book and Eight Skilled Gentlemen. But, I was disappointed. This book never pulled me in. I could put it down and never felt any "need" to pick it back up again. I eventually finished because I was on a plane and bored. The story was not engaging. I felt no connection to the characters and I didn't care when important ones died. In the prologue, Ox says, "I didn't understand anything that followed . . . perhaps a kind reader will write and explain it to me." I can't be that kind reader, because I also didn't understand. I don't think I'll read that 3rd book now. There are too many other things I'd rather read.

A hollow, false, ineptly wrought policier. Though supposedly written in an American's voice, it begins "I am a police." Which to my ear sounds like Amis, not like any American cop I know. A disappointing book from start to finish.

The Lovely Bones is the story of Susie Salmon, a teenager who was kidnapped, raped, and murdered on her way home from school. It is, in fact, purportedly told from Susie's point of view, but not really. The book itself is about her... quietly haunting her friends and family as they reel from loss, as they move forward in life with or without mending, as the family tries to find a new balance. I had so many problems with this book. From the two-dimensional characters with no real drive (and some fairly awful stereotypes, like the exotic foreign neighbor) to the complete lack of plot, I struggled to even finish. Though the book is supposedly from Susie's point of view, that's not entirely accurate - it's told from the point of view of all the other characters, with an occasional "oh, and there I was, hiding in the corner, conveniently privy to all their thoughts and feelings" from dead-susie. Without plot, and thus without any kind of forward motion in the book (I seriously even hesitate to call the book a 'story', since it honestly wasn't), characters seem to wander aimlessly without direction over the course of more than ten years. Things change, yes - but that change doesn't really mean anything to the reader. And when the characters are so flat, so... gray, who cares if they change anyways? This also means that there's no build up, no tension as we draw close to the Big Moment - and honestly, the big moments toward the end of the book don't really seem to have all that much of an impact on anyone, character or reader. If you were to read about these final events written in short sentences on note cards, you would go "holy cow! Can't wait to get to that part!" But... once you do, you kind of wonder if maybe you skipped over something. I know there are folks out there who enjoyed this book. To each their own. There were moments when I enjoyed the prose, but not many... and the concept itself is interesting, though the execution was far from. That's about the best I can say.

Two painfully slow attempts later, I finally finished this book. And I fear I may be the only book reviewer whose general impression was a shrug rather than a shout. In Cutting for Stone, twin brothers Shiva and Marion are born into extraordinary circumstances. Extraordinarily bizarre. Extraordinarily dangerous. Extraordinarily sad. Their father, a visitng surgeon in Ethiopia, impregnates his nurse assistant — a nun. When she dies giving birth, and Stone can’t save her, he disappears, leaving the boys with another doctor in the hospital who adopts and raises them. Never meeting their father, the twins grow up to become doctors themselves. Covering two generations, this book is big and bold, undertaking the task of painting Ethiopia’s political landscape, medicine, internal landscapes of betrayal and regret. The characters are interesting, the plot moves quickly but fluidly. Really, it’s a very good book. It just didn’t thrill me. The problem might be that I read it too slowly due to life and circumstances. It is the kind of book that seeks to sweep the reader along. Though lengthy, it’s really sort of a one-sit read. And I read it in tiny bursts. I also associated it with Khalid Hosseini’s books, which completely and entirely rocked my world. Perhaps because they are both international books about the relationships between boys and written by physicians, I was expecting The Kite Runner. And, for me, it wasn’t The Kite Runner. Nevertheless, I would highly recommend this book. It’s the kind of book that should travel with you on vacation. Though it’s emotionally heavy, it deserves undivided attention. I’m really glad that I finished.

This was unlike any book I have ever read - mainly because of its tone. I loved the humor, and I laughed out loud several times. On the other hand, the stark greusomenss of other parts was horrifying. Great contrast. In the first half of the book, I kind of kept thinking "ok, you've made your point - beaurocracies are ridiculous and inefficient," but in the second half it picked up. I really enjoyed it.
