This book reminded me why I should never think that this series can't be serious. While Charlaine Harris is known for her lighter mysteries (Aurora Teagarden), it was her Lily Bard series that first hooked me. And so I see undertones of that gritty reality in this installment of the Sookie Stackhouse series. This book is more grim, probably due to its proximity to Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. Our heroine goes through some pretty intense and live-threatening situations (while the norm for these books, the tone is definitely more serious than in others). Sookie really has to question what she views as right and wrong, what she can and will do, and what she must say no to. Added in is major family drama, on top of all the other supernatural drama going on, so this is a stressful book for Sookie and I think for the readers as well. But the end gave me hope that there will be more trouble, but maybe more good times ahead. Only Charlaine Harris knows...

It had the promoise fo a great read but, too much like a documentary for me
I really got into this book at the halfway point, when Sabina met Adam (the mage), Giguhl (the demon), and Vinca (the nymph). Her interactions with Giguhl were a hoot! I'll definitely be reading more of this series!

A great book to read if you are of Irish ancestry. It was fascinating to read about Pavees and their lifestyle and the perception others have of them and why.

A Review of It’s Not About the Bike: My Jouney Back to Life I have recently read It’s Not About the Bike. This is Lance Armstrong’s autobiography about his battle through cancer and how he overcame it. This book kept my attention throughout every page. It was easy to relate obstacles he went through in his life to obstacles I have personally gone through. Everyone has had to overcome personal battles in their live. Lance, for example, was told that he had less than a 40% chance of living after he found out his testicular cancer had spread to his lungs, abdomen, and brain. Some people would have no belief that they could overcome this. Lance fought through it all, and came out even stronger, winning the Tour De France six times. I think every student at Big Foot High School should be required to read this book because it reminds you to appreciate your life and the people you have. Lance expressed to the reader that “Cancer was the best that ever happened to me.” Everything happens for a reason, and even though things may seem difficult at that point in time, it will all work out.

I liked this book but it felt a bit clunky in places and the ending was abrupt and a shade too happy to feel realistic, especially considering how well Valentine dealt with life in a family that had been torn apart by loss.

Not nearly as good as Still Alice. I think the main problem is that it is a first person narrative (and Still Alice was third person). I find 1st person narration the hardest to believe, the hardest for a writer to pull off. And in this case, the main character was not that lovable. But also, because the narrator is telling the story, we don't get to learn any of the interesting medical details of the condition "Left Neglected." In the first part of the book, pre-accident, the narrator tells us how great she is at her job, how great her marriage is, how much she loves her kids (although she doesn't seem to spend any time with them except when she feeds them ice cream before putting them to bed--sorry for the judgmental aside). We can't exactly believe her, and it is not until much later in the book that she does something to show she IS a mom, when she pays attention to her son enough to help him with his learning disability. Does she ever notice that her mom's health isn't great, even as she is giving the details that any reader would pick up on? As other reviewers have noted, she is a boring main character, and a stereotype. Thus, many readers will identify with her--they will feel like they know her or they will be like her--perhaps that is why there are so many 5-star reviews for this. I was looking forward to reading this, because Still Alice was so interesting and made me think so much. I hope that Genova does not move towards lighter, chick-lit fiction (seems to be plenty of that out there!) and instead gives us more of the books that only she can write, that bring brain science into real life.

I have been using this for some months now. I enjoy the lessons and such, but if I didn't know what I do know already about drawing, it would be a bit beyond me. I haven't looked at the longer full book, but I suspect this would be supplemented well by having the full book. Update: I now own the full book. It really does help out in using the notebook. I also noticed that some of the art in the workbook has been distorted. So my imitations are a little distorted, but that's ok. it was only supposed to be a reference anyway. I have reduced the stars.
