One of the most boring books I have ever had to read for school. This book like Fast Food Nation seems to me like the school system trying to cram their views down the neck of it's students. The book is nothing but cut dry facts and opinions of one person living a life on minimum wage, maybe people living on minimum wage are so unhappy because our modern society is based on material possessions and if people weren't so focused on having 200 TV channels or a cell phone with talk text and data all unlimited we might find a little more money for the necessities and not have to fight to survive.

I listened to this book on audio and it was very entertaining. At some times, the historic portion of the book seemed a bit nonsensical.

Brutal, but affecting. Not to be read lightly.

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand is Ambien in the form of a novel. I read to page 230 and just could not go another page. I did enjoy the Major's dry sense of humor and sarcasm but found the story at large to be very slow, unconvincing and boring. All in all, a MAJOR DISSAPOINTMENT!
A few weeks back I mentioned that I generally don’t like mysteries. Well, this is the third mystery I’ve read in recent weeks that I’ve absolutely loved. So prepare to watch me eat humble pie. The thing that makes Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs series so good, is the excellent incorporation of historical fiction into her stories. Miss Dobbs is a professional London-based sleuth in the years following World War I. Her latest assignment: to find a runaway heiress. The background of the war plays a big part in this novel, and not only does Ms. Winspear present an interesting mystery of twists and turns, but I learned a little something about the time period and the repercussions of the Great War. Excellent!

I have to say my favourite part of this book is Jacobs perspective. the fact this book has 2 definite and distinct voices is part of its magic. I know I will read this series again when I feel; the need to touch home in a book.
I really liked the Big Stone Gap Series by Trigiani. Since I have family members from the region and am familiar with the culture of the area she writes about, the characters just came alive for me. I could hear the accents in my head and laughed aloud at some of her characters. To keep this series interesting she has added a few non-traditional characters, including the protagonist, the single woman with the Italian heritage. If you listen to books on tape, try to get a version read by the author herself. Trigiani has a wonderful WV accent that sounds perfect. I listened to a recent book of hers read by another actress who was probably from upstate NY trying to achieve the WV accent and it just didn't fly. Plus, she audibly swallowed a lot. It made me thirsty.
