It doesn't quite all come together in the end; that's why 4 stars rather than 5. Although from what I understand whole chapters are missing in the English translation, so who knows? But regardless, it's brilliant. The balance of the surreal and the aggressively normal is fantastic, and oh, May Kasahara. I could have read this book just for the parts where she turns up. Love her.

Lee Child has a wonderful formula for grabbing the reader's attention and not letting go. The reader will find herself going back again and again to Child's books. I call this genre of book my 'donut' reading: Not literary - simply page after page of pure entertainment.

Happy to have just finished my dear friend Lise's latest novel. What a treat. Focused on a single mom and her two teenaged daughters who become immersed in The Tempest when a Shakespeare troupe arrives to their tiny island outside of Seattle. All three are cast in the play where drama ensues as mom and daughter vie for the same handsome New York actor playing one of the clowns. Portrait of the single hippy mom who struggles to make ends meet is lovingly rendered. Several moments in the book I thought, "How did Lise capture my life so clearly?" A lovely read, check it out!

while it's written like a child's one-sentence-per-page picture book, making it a VERY quick read (maybe 20 minutes), it's definitely not a children's book. perfect for anyone with a dark and twisted sense of humor.

I wish I'd written about this right after I'd finished it, when I was still caught in the world of the story, which is incredibly well-drawn. The book is told in two parallel first person narratives: one following a faery changeling in his new, human life; and one following the little boy he replaced in his life among the faeries. Donohue's depiction of faeries was really different and not what I was expecting; this is no grand court of Titania, but a hard, meager existence eked out in the woods—like an especially brutal version of Peter Pan's lost boys. Donohue doesn't flinch away from the brutality of this, or the more disturbing aspects of sexuality in people who grow older in mind but remain children in body. In contrast, the original changeling (who was also, once long ago, a human boy) gets his second chance at human life, discovering a remarkable gift for music. Donohue does a really good job showing the sadness and the beauty in both characters' situations, and the book, which could have been gut-wrenchingly tragic, maintains a wonderful sense of hope. A first novel, and a really fascinating one.

i didn't start out loving it as much as i loved prep, but it got better.
I've been a fan of these books for ages, and I finally actually bought all four (and all four reviews will be the same, by the way). These books consist of random vintage photographs, coupled with Sigmund Falch's hilarious captions. Said text is simply brilliant, often things you'd never think of. The photographs themselves are great, but with the awesomeness of the captions, it has a laugh-out-loud effect that few books are able to create. They also work very well as a pick-me-up on a dreary, I-don't-feel-so-good morning. You can't not laugh. Great stuff.
The writing is beautiful, and the author very realistically portrays human nature--both in our desire to believe and in our jealousy and hatred. Still, the book leaves me strangely hollow. I wish there were more to it.
