If I could, I would probably give it 2.5 stars. Probably my least favorite of those I've read from him. Overall, I liked it, but there were parts of the book that I thought were VERY slow, dull, and drawn out. And then there were other parts of the story which I thought should have been given more time and detail, and he passed over them so quickly. If you can past his disregard for the structure of English language(no quotations, random apostrophes, etc.), there is at the core, a great Western story. I do realize this is part 1 of the Border Trilogy series and I'll probably end up reading them all, but I feel no dire need to so this instant.

I have very mixed feelings about this story. It was undeniably touching, yet put forward a point of view that bothers me. (view spoiler) It was interesting to see Charley's "grim reaper" job from the other side, though. This has spoilers for First Grave on the Right, and probably won't be very interesting if you haven't read that anyway.

Sara Gruen maneuvered between the past and present of Jacob's life seamlessly. His past helps to explain the person that he became in the present. I was really moved by the writing and the emotions that were so well crafted. I recently lost an Uncle who was in an "assisted living facility," and this book helped me to see those residents much clearer -- how lonely some of them must be and how much they look forward to visits from their relatives. The circus was such a big day for the characters in this book -- we all need to make sure that we bring the circus into the lives of our loved ones more often -- especially those who can't make the trip on their own. This was an excellent book and it left me with some lasting impressions, and it made me resolve to do a better job of keeping in touch with my relatives, elderly and not.

I liked it, but honestly not as much as I thought I would. I LIKED Rochester, I LIKED Jane, I LIKED Thornfield - but not as much I LOVED, say, Sydney Carton, Christine, or Notre Dame of other classics (A Tale of Two Cities, The Phantom of the Opera, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame respectively). All of those stories were written by men (Dickens, Leroux, and Hugo). Even my other favorite classics, Dracula and The Mystery of Edwin Drood, were written by men. I hate to say it, but between this and my dreadful attempt to get into Pride and Prejudice, it's starting to look like my tastes really don't match with the 19th century female writer scene. Oh, and that disastrous shot at Wuthering Heights just confirms it. I'm not quite sure what to make of this analysis yet, but that seems to be the case. Anyway, Jane Eyre was good, and I appreciated it, but quite simply the style didn't suit me. I tend to feel that writers like Charlotte Bronte are very melodramatic, in a more annoying way than writers such as Dickens and Leroux. Hugo is a different bucket of fish, so I won't go there. Also, what with the surge of it in YA fiction of late, I'm growing less and less enchanted with first-person narrative. I know, I know, Jane Eyre was written hundreds of years before all that - but go ahead and call me uncultured, because the way Jane Eyre was written reminds me irresistibly of modern day YA lit. Make of that what you will.

This was actually one of Jennifer Crusie's older books. It is a lot of fun--chick lit with some of the outrageousness you normally see in the Stephanie Plum books. Lucy has thrown out her husband Bradley for cheating. She is meeting him at a diner to tie up some loose ends with the divorce. Two detectives are looking for Bradley because he's an embezzler. They get a tip that Bradley will be at the diner. They don't find Bradley, but they hear Lucy talking about him. Lucy and one of the detectives "meet cute" in alley where she thinks he's a mugger and he's trying to protect her from someone shooting at her. Lots of silliness and danger ensue.

1996 review: An Alice Hoffman style romance: full of problems. The main character is a librarian, dig it? 2014 review: One of my favorite books...re-read it again while on vacation in Barbados. A great beach read. A wonderful view into librarianship in a small touristy east coast town. A wonderful view into deeply developed characters that make you ache to get to know them.

I bet you didn't know Lewis was a sci-fi author. It's interesting what he's trying to do in this book. This is not his best work by any means but a fun read.

Everything about this story was completely underwhelming. I bought books 1 and 2 so I plowed through it and hoped it would get better in "Pretties"...
