A tale about a mother/daughter relationship. Some good messages, i.e. Be grateful to the people that helped you get to where you are. Life is hard.

A beautifully haunting book that is quite incredible. Deciding whether it really happened or not it not the point. Just be transported and enjoy

Entertaining account of the rise and rise of the mighty Led Zeppelin. The death of John Bonham ends the long strange trip just as you feel it was probably about to implode anyway. The more questionable behaviour (step forward Jimmy Page) exemplifies some of the black heart of the rock and roll business. Perhaps it was a slightly more innocent age, but the hedonism starts to have a rather desperate edge to it as the story progresses. Would have been nice to have more detail of the making of the records, but I'm a bit of a geek like that.

I loved the book. I could not put it down. To read a 500 page book within a weeks time while working 50 hours in the week and studying for a test has to say something about the book!

I'm terrible at open-ended puzzles because I never get any sense of whether I'm moving in the right direction. The solution to a good puzzle makes you go, "A-ha! Of course!" After two hours with 'Maze', I never had that feeling. I still made what seemed like arbitrary, any-choice-works decisions.

I am tempted to write this review a la Holdenspeak, but I will resist. I read this book many years ago when I was a young teen. I loved it,as many young people did, and felt Holden was speaking for me. I was inspired to reread it after just finishing the latest biography of J.D. Salinger. As a matter of fact, while I was finishing the bio, I retrieved my old paperback and started it. Well, reader, I am happy to say that my (much) older self was just as moved as my youngerr self, perhaps in different ways. This time, I identified Salinger's voice as Holden after having learned more about him. For instance, Holden has a fictional brother named D.B. This older brother is a writer who has "sold out" in Holden's eyes by going to Hollywood to write for the movies. As all Holden fans know, this made him a "phoney". Knowing now how Salinger felt about Hollywood, this briefly mentioned character stood out a bit more. Also, after learning about Salinger's deep interest in Zen Buddhism and other Eastern religions, I noticed a thread of that in this novel. But, above all, there is the miracle of Holden Caufield. Whatever else J.D. Salinger did or did not accomplish in his years as a recluse, he gave us Holden.
Review to come!

Its been years since I read this book of course, but I remember it very well as being thrilling and interesting and definitely different to anything else I might have been reading at the time. I know at the time i had not yet been to the USA and was fascinated by the sense of heat and the plantation where the book is set. The setting really added to the atmosphere and mystery and it stuck in my mind even after all these years!

A powerful book about medicine gone wrong. Vicki Forman gave birth to twins so premature that they should have been allowed merciful deaths. Instead, the doctors took every heroic measure to make them live. One died anyway, and the other lived eight years with terrible complications and disabilities. Forman's appeal is that she is honest about the awfulness of her situation. She doesn't mince words. Reading the book is, of course, uncomfortable, as she traps you with her in the nightmare of callous doctors and inappropriate nurses. I did feel, however, that it was very difficult to feel for her son, and I found this odd since he was at the center of the story. Haven't quite figured that out yet, and perhaps it's because she focused so heavily on the first year of his life, which was a series of worsening diagnoses and medical crises. But I felt no grief to learn in the Epilogue of his death, only relief. Maybe that's appropriate, but I'm not sure. Terribly sad.
