It was ok and kept my interest, but I wasn’t emotionally pulled in enough. Sex was ok. There is a lot of it. STORY BRIEF: Jessica, Zoe, and Angela are from the planet Blue. They have unusual coloring in their hair and eyes. They were forcibly taken from their home planet and labeled as “throwbacks” which means despicable, undesirable, etc. Commander Bragg later took possession of them. He has tortured them for years, forcing them to provide sex to those he chooses. Recently he promised to let them return to their home planet if they would rescue a group of Braugh men from a Doxyn prison. Zoe and Angela stay on a small ship while Jessica goes to the planet and talks the guards into letting her provide sex to the Braugh leader. The guards allow it as part of their custom before execution. She distributes lock picks to the men and helps them fight the guards and get off the planet. When she realizes Bragg has no intention of letting the women return to their planet, she asks the Braugh men to claim Zoe and Angela as wives which will prevent Bragg from continuing his torture and forced sex services. Shane the Braugh leader is attracted to Jessica. Shane claims Jessica for himself so Bragg won’t have her anymore. Jessica is reluctant to commit. Bragg has evil plans to get the women back. As part of their torture, the women were pierced in ways to prevent sexual pleasure. Shane is the first man to give Jessica pleasure in spite of the piercings. REVIEWER’S OPINION: I don’t have much to say about this other than what I’ve said above. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t engaging enough to make me want to read something else by this author. Sex scenes include oral sex in front of others and rear door activity. There was a happy ending. DATA: Story length: 222 pages. Swearing language: strong. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 7. Estimated number of sex scene pages: 39. Setting: a future time on spaceships and three far away planets. Copyright: 2010. Genre: erotic sci-fi romance.

SUMMARY In this book, someone hoping to learn the basics of zine-making can find lots of information. There are pages and pages artfully crafted with a vintage typewriter and lots of pens and markers by more than 20 contributors that presume to inform young zinesters. There is a section on the 200 year history of zines, another section about how to make your own zine. There are lists of ideas for young people who can't think of their own ideas. There are suggestions on how to use the copy machine brilliantly, and alternative ways to print the zine. Then there are sections about binding and collating, and distribution. The book leaves the reader with a list of resources, zine libraries, and a glossary of terms. EVALUATION I’m glad I didn’t purchase this book. While it provides limited useful information (mainly as a strictly inorganic how-to instruction manual for people who don’t get the trial-and-error, organic process that zine-making is), it is sorely lacking in describing the spirit or the art, and it focuses way too much on the comic strips. Coming from the creators of one of the longest running and better known zines out there, I had higher expectations. I’m no zine connoisseur but I buy my fair share (even contributed to several), and I published a 6-issue zine called Lunch with a Ladybug in high school and and sold it in the cafeteria. I now publish chapbooks of poetry and a literary journal (all hand-bound), and I appreciate the zinesters even more. One of my favorites is a double zine (read one, flip it over, read the other one—they meet in the middle) called Risk Oblivious Youth / Chick Pea. At the end of the first side (in this case, Risk Oblivious Youth, because which is the first side could potentially be a chicken/egg debate), there is advice for those who are feeling blue. Number two on the list says that I should borrow fish identification books from the library because “reading something so methodical and orderly about a part of nature so hidden to us really [takes:] the edge off.” I should take this book back and get a book on how to identify fish. Or flowers. Or something. I can show some kids how to make a zine myself.

This series has been delightful so far, and I absolutely plan to read all forthcoming installments. That being said, this Helen trilogy within the series is not my favorite. I much preferred the Diogenes trilogy. Cold Vengeance was better than Fever Dream in many ways, but it was still a bit too complex in inconclusive. All the books are pretty much stand-alone (even the ones part of the Diogenes trilogy), but I feel like FD and CV were too complex to be read just by themselves. There is so much going on- secret groups and incredibly elaborate plots and frequently changing settings. Not as strightforward as the other books, but still very good. I'm feeling bad for Pendergast after reading this book. He seems to be acting more and more like Diogenes and less like the humane and modest Pendergast we've come to know and love. Anyway, looking forward to what comes next. Cliffhangers are awesome.
