Let me start off by saying I loved this book. I did, it was a delightful read. The protagonists were charming and the banter between all of the characters had me in hysterics. Bear is a young man left as the sole guardian of his young brother after being abandoned by their mother right before his high school graduation. At 17 he goes from having a future full of possibilities to one full of responsibilities. Adding to that were the new confusing feelings he was having for his best friend's brother, Otter. After a bit of misinterpreting of one another from both sides, Otter leaves, goes off to San Diego for three years and tries valiantly to get over his feelings for Bear. In the end though, he returns to his hometown and to the man that has haunted his heart. Things, of course, are not that simple, there's some angst thrown in and a little panicked “Oh my God, I'm gay!” from Bear, but the author fixes it all and left me with the warm fuzzies of a wonderful HEA read. So, why the 4 star rating you're probably wondering. I deducted 1 star for the continued and annoying use of one word throughout the course of the book. Retarded. “That's retarded,” “don't be retarded,” “feeling retarded,” etc were used numerous times in the novel. I understand that these are fictional characters, however, I still found the use of that word inappropriate and had a hard time equating the charming characters that were being described to me, with one that would use the term retarded as a euphemism for stupid. I would hope that the next time this author writes a story and I do hope he does so soon, because I did enjoy this, he takes into consideration the fact that some things should simply not be said, by fictitious characters or anyone else. Some words are rude, inconsiderate and inappropriate in any context.

Excellent upper elementary school novel. This is a Virginia Reader's Choice book. It revolves around a great mystery and has some excellent characters. Other themes family, fitting in, teasing, etc.

Another good one. I find there aren't many bad Mary Stewart books, just some that are less good than others. The heroine is very spunky and fun. She is a lot of fun to read. There are a couple embarrassing moments for her, but she comes through them easily. Excellent romance. The very beginning is bit slow, but it picks up fast.

Well-researched and readable biography of Rousseau, whom I really didn't know too much about. It made me want to read some of his work. He was a major influence on Western culture in the past 200 years, so it's interesting to see what forces shaped him and how his contemporaries viewed him.

This is the third Anita Shreve book I've read, and they are among my favorite books every time. This tells the story of a woman escaping NYC and her abusive husband and heading to a sleepy Maine fishing town. While the story itself is intriguing, the medium in which it is told makes the book stellar. It is told in letters to a reporter writing a story for a magazine. Twenty years later, the reporter is giving the interview letters to the abused woman's daughter. The interview letters are coming from the victim in jail, so that is established at the very beginning; the reader can guess what ultimately happened, but the getting there is the best part.
