The third last chapter has all the action. Professor Umbridge is a new character you love to hate. This book was between 3 and 4 stars for me.

I was very happy when I found out Robin Hobb had started a new trilogy. I had really enjoyed the previous nine books. But this book... was different. It trudged on, telling more about the political situation in the fantasy world and detailing about customs and manners. It didn't seem like there was any story going on. I left it alone after 250 pages for almost two years and only picked it up because I was bored on the stationary bike. It took another 200 pages because I started to get a little more interested in what happened to the main characters, because, well, things actually happened. The lengthy descriptions of the classes on the academy were boring as hell. This book seriously could've done with half the words, it would have been a lot better. A lot less muck to wade through. And even with all those words I didn't feel at all connected with whatever character. The stiff rules of society and nobility annoyed me to no ends, I was hoping for rebellion on every page. So yeah. Disappointment. I'll probably skip the rest of the trilogy and try the next one.

This book is less of a story and more of an ongoing narrative about food and French scenery. Although it made me hungry, it was hardly engaging. I found myself picking it up less and less as I got into other, more interesting, books. That's not to say it's without its merits. But, if you're looking for a book you can't put down, this is NOT it.

I love this book because it is an off-beat version of a very classic story. I think that it would also be amazing to use this book when talking about our own writing, and the creative things that we could do with our writing!

When I first read this book about 10 years ago, it blew my mind. I go back to it from time to time for a refresher of its ideas, or simply to be encouraged and inspired. Palmer provides a compelling and accessible introduction to epistemology in general, and explains why the purely "objective" approach to knowledge that most of us were taught in school is incomplete and misleading. He describes learning in terms of relationships - to ourselves, our teachers, our fellow learners, and to whatever/whoever it is we're studying, making the case that these relationships can (and should) affect our learning significantly in a variety of ways. Palmer writes primarily for teachers, but his ideas apply to anyone who is teaching or learning anything at all, in any stage of life. This is a short, simple book but it has to be read slooooooowly to be absorbed. Better yet, read it with someone else and talk through the ideas.

This took me a long time to get into. This historical novel is divided into three parts and I drifted through it to the middle of the book before getting at all interested. The villainous premise of one of the major subplots was comically wicked (which means I'll probably find out it's all true) and that distracted from the baseline realism of the book. I liked that it didn't follow the historically unlikely direction it seemed to be going in (twice!). It all pays off in the third act, which is exciting and dramatic and mostly full of resolution. The setting of Dejima, the small island off Nagasaki Dutch traders were restricted to, was also in an east meets west sort of way.

Rushdie ain't famous for nothing. This is an amazing novel that might be even more amazing if you can forget the aftermath -- hold back on reading any of Rushdie's (or anyone else's) essays on the matter until you finish the book and you'll get a lot more out of it.

When I found out that my twelve-year-old granddaughter was reading and liking this book, I decided to read it also so we could discuss. I liked it too. But it kept reminding me of Neil Gaiman's American Gods. Percy Jackson, (the book is the first in a series called Percy Jackson and the Olympians) is the son of Poseidon and a mortal woman. He has problems (ADHD, a temper, a missing dad, a disgusting step-father) and he has been expelled from numerous private schools. Forget about public school. The summer he goes to Camp Half-Blood, he learns for the first time who he really is and gets sent on a quest to recover the lightning bolt of Zeus. Non-stop action, lots of funny bits, kids having to figure out things for themselves; all make it an entertaining story and I can see why it has sold gazillions, also why reluctant readers and especially boys like it. Riodan has cleverly combined all the elements. Camp Half-Blood is Percy's Hogwarts. He has his half-blood friends, each of whom has a Greek god or goddess for one parent. The quest. A boy wanting to please and get recognition from his absent father. Hell is entered through Los Angeles, Mt Olympus via a skyscraper in Manhattan. A Las Vegas amusement park/hotel is a locale where kids never want to leave and lose all track of time. Despite all the "borrowing" this is a great way to introduce kids to mythology and is much more fun to read than The Golden Fleece.
