Engrossing historical fiction with great character development--my favorite kind of reading, really. :) This is the story of the construction of an English cathedral in the Middle Ages and all of the characters surrounding it--the architects, builders, nobility, priests, and peasants. Wonderful!

I knew a bit about Dorian Gray before I read the book, but it was great to see where the character really came to life in Oscar Wilde's novel. On occasion the writing was a little tough to get into, but no matter how dull a passage seemed, it always ended up having a purpose to further the plot, and each chapter ended in such a way that I wanted to immediately continue. I also felt like there could have been so much more to this story! Time flew by between the chapters, and I wish Wilde wrote a little more about Dorian's life and the things he did that made his portrait so appalling. However, the few instances he did give were more than enough excitement to relay the changing of the picture.

Yo read the hoo-doo section. Hurston was a trained in anthropology at Barnard under Margaret Mead. Hurston was not making that stuff up. Everything she did was for real. My great-grandmother used to talk about people planting roots on her and John the Conquerer.

A terrific novel about World War One. Faulks has clearly done his research, but he never lets you feel it - he puts you right in the trenches as the characters experience unimaginable horrors. I really liked the first 100 pages, set in 1910 - the reader gets to know Stephen, the protagonist, as a human being, making his wartime experiences all the more painful. What I didn't like were the (thankfully few) interstitial "modern-day" chapters featuring Stephen's adult granddaughter. They add nothing to the plot and were a little didactic, whereas the WWI chapters (which comprise the bulk of the book) are lean, concise, and visceral.
What happened to the movie that was supposed be made based on this book?? I've been waiting for it! I loved this book -- very suspenseful, great characters and interesting twists.

Loved it, loved it, loved it. The author's sense of humor, the all-too-familiar pitfalls of backpacking, the description of the AT's natural beauty, the tidbits of information sprinkled throughout the story... I enjoyed every page and tore through this book. At one point I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes, and it's a rare book that can make me do that, at least not in public. I enjoyed it very much.

The settings are interesting—everything from a Renaissance Faire near Washington, D.C., to coastal California, to Louisiana. In addition, you meet a wide array of secondary characters who add interest and local color. If the plot sometimes stretches the limits of belief a little bit, that’s ok. The audiobook is read by Dick Hill, who is always a treat to listen to.
It's got good idea, but it's not the "magic bullet" I was hoping for. There's not enough structure for me.
Reading this wonderfull book again What a pleasure This book, now that i read it again, blossoms like an simphony to life Awesome indeed
