I'm in love. This is everything good children's literature should be...layered (so children and adults can get different things out of it), totally imaginative, intelligent, well-written, full of magic and talking animals and arctic expeditions and hot air balloons and parallel universes and political upheaval (pauses to catch breath) and dark matter and beautiful witches and philosophy and physics. Yeah, physics. Lyra is such a wonderful, rich character -- a brave tomboy who'd rather be an explorer than an aristocrat. I would have children just so they could read this book.

Another home run by Norris. I need to go back and reread this having read her Cloister Walk and Dakota as the streams of the three works have become con-fused in my recollection.

The story of Ernest Hemingway's first marriage is sufficiently interesting to serve as the plot for a historical novel. The 1920s Parisian setting and supporting cast of "the lost generation" held my attention, but I had a hard time connecting with the narrator, Hemingway's wife Hadley. Considering that Paula McLain has been accused of clinging too tightly to her research, I'm assuming that my complaints have historical basis, but Hadley just didn't seem entirely believable to me. I understand what drew her to Hemingway, but I don't understand why he was equally obsessed with her. Maybe it was her neediness, maybe he saw in her someone who would take care of him and put his needs first. The only clue that it might have been more than that is the bullfighter who becomes enamored of Hadley and her red hair.

This is the least favorite of all the Elm Creek Quilters books. But if you are a Civil War buff - you will love it.
Oh My God. Can this series get any better!? Any more emotional, Heart breaking, tearful and romantic? Yes! The last book in the The Hollow series The Hidden is a perfect ending for an amazing series. Caspian and Abby are back and more in Love that ever. Things are changing and looking worse for wear and through out the novel I was on the edge of my seat praying that everything would be okay. This novel was definantly the best outta the whole three. Just because things we waited for through out the series all seemed to come into place. Jessica has written such a captivating exciting story. Again the scenes between Caspian and Abby are Amazing! Even more beautiful than ever. Some really touching moments and if you loved their scenes in the first two books then you will LOVE these scenes. I promise you. I wanna say that I'm so sad its all over and I will miss Caspian and Abby very much. I loved going through their story together, from their one touch to declaring their undying love for eachother. Great trilogy!
This was my second time reading this crazy epic. Loved it again. If you can get around the long (and great) love story there's actually some fascinating historical perspectives.

I listened to this on audio. It wasn't as good as I was expecting. I wanted more action with the literary heroines and less about the mental health unit that the narrator ends up in. I wouldn't read it again, but perhaps youngish teen girls would like it more than I did.
Book 3 I wasn't thrilled with but book 4 has pulled me back into the world of the Women's Murder Club.
What a talented author. The writing style matured as the character grew. It was such a moving piece. A story of the most unassuming hero full of courage.

Twilight gets my highest rating of the books, simply because it ably sets the stage for what unfolds in the rest of the saga. It provides clear cut examples of what a woman needs from a man, albeit in dramatically exaggerated form (which is appropriate given that the book deals with a teenage girl, who is likely to see things in dramatic terms anyway). Here we see Bella's desire to be looked at, her desire to be protected, her need to be listened to -- and perhaps, above all, her need to be accepted despite her many flaws. This is one of the fundamental secrets to the success of the whole series: Bella is the everywoman, a girl of no particular talent or grace who is loved by a godlike young man...forever. That single fact encompasses much of the power of Meyer's series and is the reason I wrote my book, Everything I Needed to Know about Women I Learned by Reading Twilight: A Vampire's Guide to Eternal Love, to draw this fact out and show how couples can learn from this important series how to give each other the love they need.
