What an odd idea for a book. Victorian-era magic tricks, Nikolai Tesla, and science fiction all blended together in a delicious soup. I'd give it more stars but some of the plot points are a bit of a cop-out, frankly.

My husband and I read this one together, as we are both American Civil War buffs, as well as fans of Australian author Thomas Keneally. It was very absorbing, believable, interesting and worthwhile. Mr Keneally has really done his research on this war and its cultural setting, and is knowledgeable about the various generals and other personages, and it all rang true. The various fictional characters were all well drawn, and their stories gripping. Our hearts ached for those on both sides of the war, so even-handed was the treatment.

Quite possibly my second-favorite novel of all time... but for the last chapter. Rip those pages out and you've got an absolute masterpiece. It's an escapist, engrossing modern fairy tale of sorts; once you've lived in the world of Bel Canto, you don't ever really want to leave it. It paints such a lovely picture of an idyllic, utopian environment. Sigh. Oh, if only I could be held hostage in Peru...

Engrossing, well written tale of a black family populated with an eclectic group of characters(pregnant 16 yr. old, lapsed preacher & his one legged wife, lesbian pig farmer, mortician's son....). The pregnant 16 yr old is off to dig up her mother's body because rumour has it her Mom (willa mae) was borrowed with her diamond & they all need the $$. The author is a professor @ CalArts in Valencia. I liked it-a very fast read!
