An excellent fantasy novel, the first in a series of 4. It follows several people from several families in a fantastic kingdom/world as they all vie for the power to rule the empire. Light on sorcery/magic but heavy on intrigue and deceit, this novel should appeal to all kinds of people. *** edit *** It seems there are going to be 7 books total, but only 4 have been published so far. That sucks. I hate waiting 5 years to finish a series.

I started this a while ago but gave up. Very dense and I did not find it accessible or enjoyable. I feel like it is a book I should read as I admire what the author is trying to do. Will try again one day
I picked up this book in Ireland and read it through the many train, boat and plane adventures I had on that trip. It is still one of my favorite books and I should reread it soon because I have an inkling I will like it even better now.

Just bought this last night. I heard about it when it came out in hardcover and it just came out in soft... pretty good so far. Glad he didn't write the whole thing in Scottish accent.

Very tasty recipes! Love how it's written, too. My husband and I are not vegan, but we love it so far. Big props for the falafel, horseradish tofu, and wasabi mashed potatoes. Everything we've tried has been delicious. I love that she has a good variety of tofu dishes. We really love tofu, and we were so sick of just stir frying it.

O'Nan is extraordinary at depicting the ordinary. I didn't like this as much as Last Night at the Lobster, but still found it interesting. Tedious at times, though saying that makes me feel like a bad person because it's all about a family's reaction to a daughter gone missing. O'Nan perfectly captures the enduring hope, resignation, and emotion. I found I liked the sections from Lyndsay's point of view most. Not necessarily something I'd recommend, but worthy of a listen.

By far the best Chuck Palahniuk book.

I'd actually give this 3.5 stars; it is a bit difficult to read and really isn't a kids book (more for early teens). Some may disagree with it being a difficult read, but unless you're use to the style, it is difficult. I say it's a teen book, not because of the life and death themes, but because of the social concepts of being an outcast and finding independence. Not really concepts that are too familiar for most young readers.

Josh continues to be annoying. However, the books are generally enjoyable.
