Prequel/last book in the Cormac saga offers all that you expect in a Polity novel; a fast and satisfying read, however it does not offer anything essentially new for Polity "veteran reader" and it is quite predictable in some ways. The novel rounds Ian Cormac's character well showing his beginning as soldier and later ECS agent with childhood flashbacks. It could also serve as a great introduction to the 5 book "main" Cormac saga and I think that newcomers to Mr. Asher's work would enjoy it greatly

I couldn't get into this story. Nothing made me all that interested in the characters. When the first 3 chapeters didn't catch me I started skimming. That lead me through the whole book. I didn't feel intrigue, romance, or even any good vampire parts. This had such a great idea just not sure where it went.

I'm interested in Egyptian history, and this is definitely a biased view of it...haha! However, Sadat had a very interesting life and he has many life strategies and defense mechanisms that are interesting to note. Regardless of if you agree with his policies and how he dealt with the Arab-Israeli conflict, the book is a good read. "My contemplation of life and human nature in that secluded place [Cell 54] had taught me that he who cannot change the very fabric of his thought will never be able to change reality, and will never, therefore, make any progress."

A murder mystery set at the American Bookseller's Association conference of 1975, and told from the point of view of a small, insecure, misanthropic author. It is clever and entertaining, as you'd expect from an Asimov mystery, and it's fascinating to see even an outdated look inside the publishing industry; but the book gets an added fillip of the surreal from the inclusion of Isaac Asimov as comic relief, and he and his protagonist taking potshots at each other in the footnotes.

An excellent exploration of how the history and reality of white supremacy, racism, and class effect the lives of blacks and whites growing up in the Northwest United States. The gathering of a team of basketball players from two different racial and economic areas of Seattle in 1986 may set the stage, but this is far from a sports book, the summer season they played given minimal time. Instead, Merlino uses this sports hook to lead us through the history of Jim Crow to the Civil Rights era, right up into the 1980's--including the increasing incarceration of the community. He also gives a history of blacks in Seattle, as well as their continued marginalization. The individual players he was able to contact twenty years after they played together are given plenty of space, along with part of their family history. Merlino excels at describing an interaction with someone, then moving to their words, then moving back in history to highlight a point or reality. Highly recommended.
