Ah-Kim (now known as Kimberly) knows her only chance to get her and her mom out of there is to succeed in school, and luckily she has the smarts to do so. She scores a perfect score on the SAT and wins a full scholarship to Yale. I loved this book and the perceptions of Chinese life, the differences b/w the two cultures, and felt I learned a lot about this. Recommended to me by a fellow adoptive mom. Would have rated it higher, though, except for how it ended, though – boo, hiss!

read this a long time ago when i was a middle school lad. definitely stuck with me for a long time, they made a movie out of it sometime later that ended up being decent. i recommend this book for boys.

Really great prequel to a really awesome trilogy!!! Bartimaeus is just as hilarious as always. Solomon and some of the more minor characters felt a little weak in character, however. Nonetheless, this was still a five-star book in my opinion.

I like the themes of Justin Gustainis' books. One of the hardest feats to do as a writer is to make an interesting book that introduces a group of new characters. Black Magic Woman introduces us to Quincy Morris, a well researched Supernatural Hunter. He does not appear to have any special powers or abilities other than a good amount of smarts, toughness and a family history of getting involved in the weird. I like the concept of the regular guy taking on the supernatural a'la Indiana Jones. We are also introduced to Libby, a witch, and Van Drennan a South African cop in the Supernatural Division. Add in a lot of interesting side characters and you get a wild introduction to the series. Fighting witches and demons; the protagonists fights for their client and friends while multiple sides, completely unaware of each other, fight to the death. Great stuff! I am looking forward to the next novel.
