Quick read. Funny and fast-paced. It touches upon the confusing world of dating.

A very odd book. Quite an amazing riff on Edgar Allen Poe's Pym book. A weird book that fascinated me when I read it. Didn't have my ears tuned at that time to the racial overtones of the book. Johnson does an over the top job of meditating on and at the same time lampooning this book, nineteenth-century and twentiety century takes on race and racism, and literary criticism in the current century. In the end too talky and preachy, too pleased with itself (though blessedly with the humor). Just didn't come together for me. But certainly much more ambitious than your average fare. (Listened to audiobook.)
So helpful for new juicers! I especially love the beginning sections on fruits and vegetables and how to store and prep them for juicing. Lots of recipes.

By this book Butcher has gotten over the worst of his writing flaws, what's left is simply a personal like or dislike for a story telling style. All of which is wiped away by the story itself. As usual Dresden gets hit, hit hard and hit early and does the whole macho, I am on my last legs, stint for nearly half the book. Maybe more, though the follow through plot makes that less about actual resources and more about resources he's willing to tap, which I find more agreeable. If you've made it this far into the series, you're already aware of his gallantry towards women, which at times can be almost offensive in its own excuses, but Dresden as a character is far less stubborn about letting a woman do anything dangerous than he was in previous novels. He can be taught! I like this because it advances several long standing plot threads that Butcher never really dropped, but showed no qualms about keeping them slow moving arcs. In book time it has been several years since the first plots of corruption had been uncovered. We don't get much here, but we get enough and it doesn't feel like it's simply a lump of plot left next to the A plot. No, it fits in seamlessly and does not feel like one big coincidence. The A plot was also nice because the surprise did not seem heavy handed, easily guessed (which happens sometimes, but forgivable in most of Dresden's instances) or simply another amazing retcon of information. No, it simply explained something we'd known about all along. My only issue, and this has been true through any of the books delving into the faerie kingdom is that I often get Summer and Winter names mixed up. It can make for tough reading.
A quick, compelling and thought-provoking read. I really loved that the story was told from a child's perspective, because although it is heartbreaking his innocence keeps it from getting too dark. I really appreciated that the author didn't end the story where many could have (without giving to much away), because it seemed so much more realistic without a fairy tale ending.
Is really good.

From a really different perspective than the usual sci-fi. Fascinating and disturbing.
Oh, my. I am going to postpone putting any kind of review here, because I hope to be able to persuade my book club to forego their ruling about booklength so that we can read and discuss this novel. I am so impressed that I am almost at a loss for words, having just finished it. What an astounding first novel--and how in the world am I just now reading it? I read her second novel years ago, and was impressed--I think--but this one is just stunning.
