A long time ago I read a review of "Leaving Las Vegas" in The New Yorker. The reviewer described how entertaining it was to see Elisabeth Shue imitate the gestures and speech of an actor. Because she didn't actually know how to act, she did her best by vaguely waving her hands around in the way she thought an "actor" would. This is pretty much how I felt about reading this book. Allen has no idea how to write a magical realist novel, so she just apes what she thinks "magical realism" is. Of course, the final product is heavy-handed, clumsy, and predictable. Fortunately, the book often fell into the "it's so bad it will make you laugh" category. So, I did laugh. Although I was also enraged at having lost several hours of my life to this novel.

The story is a little heavy (I like that though) and I really enjoyed the character development.

I read this back when I was single right after it was released. I still appreciate the insight and credit a lot of the advice to my marital success.

It has been a long time since I read this book in my early twenties. I would like to re-read it.

I gave up halfway through, was a fine story but just didn't hold my interest. Maybe I'll finish it later ... Maybe.

I actually only got through the first book of this three in one volume. After having read so much fantasy with female leads, it was sort of cool to read one with a male lead. And I did rather like Mirain, who stood out for me as a brown character in fantasy. And I guess the bisexual undertones of the novel made it a good read for me as well, especially given the rather normal way in which it was treated rather than making a deal out of it. I didn't read the second mostly because the main character was Mirain's mother, rather than Mirain himself. Not that hes the main character of the first, but he didn't appear to show up with the same regularity in the second.

We saw the 2008 movie of this (John Hurt, Julie Cox, Elijah Wood, Leonor Watling) a while ago, and were charmed by it even though the "mystery" part of it didn't seem to make much sense. The book, despite some continuity problems, is a lot more coherent. The landlady of an Argentinian student mathematician in Oxford for his PhD is murdered; he and a distinguished mathematician who was an old family friend of the dead woman assist an astonishingly well educated copper in the quest for this killing and the series of "almost imperceptible murders" that follows. The joy of the book lies not so much in the mystery plot, although that's (despite aforementioned qualms) fair enough, as in the frequent digressions as the central characters discuss (sometimes cod) mathematical philosophy; my favourite part of this was the consideration that more than one mathematical series might be defined by the same first three terms. In case that might sound forbidding, it isn't. This is great entertainment; I can imagine, though, that the publisher's efforts on the cover to make it seem like just another murder mystery must have led to some mightily puzzled commuters . . . The translation is generally very good, although every now and there's a glaring mistranslation (because literal Spanish rather than colloquial English) of a single word. I blame the copyeditor for not picking these few instances up.
Oh . . . just bite her already!! Getting sick of the story and all the history, but still entertained. That's weird huh!

I found this to be a very interesting twist on the alien-on-earth plot. The physiology of the aliens is pretty unique, and the plot was fun. It's hard to review the first book without giving things away, but I will say I was hooked from the begining.
Read 'Loving' as part of The Modern Library's Top 100 Novels of All Time list. Short and sweet. Nothing mentionable, really.
