I read it a year or so ago, and I have to say it was far from amazing. I have to reread it for english class this year, which I'm not to thrilled about. I found the authors writing style annoying and the man character, extremely annoying. Honestly, it was overrated. There are a ton of books out there that are so much better. I honestly don't get what all the fuss is about.

** spoiler alert ** Ok, so this really bugged me at first, it seemed like it took forever before the book got into its groove with all the stupid dressed up sentences and pop culture references, but I enjoyed it like every other BDB book. I have to admit though, I teared up a lot. I loved seeing the stuff going on with Wrath/Beth and with John/Xhex. I felt there could have been more Rhev/Elhena since you know, its their story, but it seemed like it had to be told with this book to make the next book work, and for the story flow. Wrath being permanently blind was so sad, I cried there, but it had to happen in order for him to become the king in all ways. Also, Tohr, how freakin sad was that, but its good that he is finally "awake" and ready to start putting his life back together. I'm still bummed that John and Xhex are going to be a couple, but I've grown to like her in this book, and you know they will have an interesting story! Plus, there is still so much mystery about her and what happened to her before. I'm sad the story is over now and it will be ages before the next book!

I saw the movie based on this book when it came out in 2002 and really enjoyed it but the book turned out to be very-poorly written and a big disappointment. It starts out with a few very confusing and odd chapters about the history of the arrival of white men to Australia and then it moves on to the story of three half white/half Aboriginal girls who are taken over 1600 miles from their homes to an institution to be assimilated into white culture and then they escape and walk back to their homes. For a journey that must have been such a brave and scary and tough thing to do it came off as very dull. The book teeters back and forth between a simple no-frills narrative (they ate, they slept, they walked over and over and over again) and extremely awkward made-up dialogue with odd descriptions of flowers and random snippets of source material thrown in. It is severely lacking in details and often repeats the same phrases sometimes even within the same paragraph. We get to know little about the personality of the girls or their motivations so it is hard to ever really make any connection with them. The author also throws in a lot of words in her native language. I usually enjoy this in other books but it is done very poorly in this one. Instead of providing a translation when a word is first used or making it so that it can easily be guessed from the context they are really just thrown out there. There is a glossary in back but I didn’t realize that until I was practically through the entire book. I think reading about the history of Australia would be very interesting but this just isn’t the book for it.

What attracted me first to this book is the fact that it was written by Mia Thermopolis, Princess of Genovia, with help from Meg Cabot, author of the Princess Diaries! It is a delightful romp from start to finish and very, very funny. Definitely a keeper on any bookshelf. There are a few historical inaccuracies - for example, women didn't wear white on their wedding days until Queen Victoria married Prince Albert and set the trend. White is a difficult colour to keep clean and only very wealthy people would have worn it. It was only in the nineteenth century that it came to symbolise purity - but it's such a smile-inducing read that I'd happily overlook them.

Didn't love it. It really felt like Vreeland was trying to shove in all the historical episodes she could regardless of how well it flowed with the plot. It’s Coney Island! It’s the subway! It’s the plight of immigrants! I thought Clara’s devotion/frustration with Tiffany had some good stuff in it, and the battle of the women to hold onto their jobs was well-played. But it was all just surface, no real depth to this story. No real drama, even when Clara’s fiancé goes insane and disappears.

** spoiler alert ** Often I find myself after a movie or book wondering what happened after the credits roll. Do they still live happily ever after? Does Neverland stay Neverland? And with this book you got to find out what happened to the Darlings and Peter Pan and Tinkerbell. I wish that I could give this book more than five stars! It was incredible and very unpredictable. At times I was a little torn about Peter Pans behavior from drinking too setting fire to someones house it seemed very undisney like (lol) but at the same time I loved it. I felt that it created a whole new depth and darkness to the character that was never there before. And the opposite for Hook they gave him a more sensitive side and more of a back story that I really liked.
