Rather entertaining- a young adult novel which doesn't mock the reader. Still a great world, plus a reference to Vimes' favorite book. The protagonist continues to become a complex character- a veritable human being. Pratchett is still a master of storycraft...

This book had good characters and a satisfying story but it could have benefitted from a good editor to chop out about 50 pages and some unnecessary characters in the middle. It would have made this into a great book, rather than just a good one.
Not my favorite Al Franken (that would have to Lies and the Lying Liars who tell them). It's an interesting read, informative about the second term of the Bush Administration but less provocative (I think) than his previous works. You just get the feel that he's reaching a bit to tell us what we already know.

Fun, soapy story about two girls from small town Ohio who go to New York City in 1929. One wants to become a famous nightclub singer, the other wants to meet her father, who left her when she was just a baby. The girls fight for no reason and go their separate ways, and get caught up in scandals and bootlegging, start dating rich young men, and generally have a good time. I liked this one for its setting and the soap opera-ness of the romantic entanglements, but it's not as fun as Vixen, also set in the flapper era.
More lovely insight into the world of Edward's thinking! I soooo wish Stephenie could be persuaded to finish it! It's worth the read, even unfinished. I read it with Twilight on my lap so that I could compare Bella's experiences/thoughts with Edward's simultaneously.

One of my "great book" judgement markers is if I think about it when I'm not reading it. I could not stop thinking about and wondering how this book could possibly work out- and I loved every page. I've heard good things about Courtney Milan, and this book really did live up to the hype. She artfully crafted not only the story, but each character as well. She had me emotionally invested in these fictional characters. My heart would break for them, then just as quickly I'd smile... and she put me through a full roller coaster ride of emotion reading this sweet book. It's a simple story really, a man is bent on destroying a family and taking everything from them... and then he meets and falls in love with a woman (the sister of said family, posing as nurse). Well it's not THAT simple as we have a number of brothers to contend with, not to mention how these two can possibly find happily ever after without one of them turning their back on their family... I liked that Margaret (female lead) starts out as a "poor me, I've had my status ripped away" wallflower, and as time goes on she realizes her own strength, as well as comes to appreciate that rank has nothing to do with value as a person or who is worth her time. Almost her complete opposite, is Ash (aka hero of story). A unique character for one of these historical romances - he manages to be strong, smart, and yet also has some insecurities and things that haunt him as well. His relationship with his brothers is definitely a highlight of this book. I was surprised a number of times, though the ultimate outcome is exactly as you'd expect from a romance novel the journey in getting there was quite a treat.
As you may know, I am reading the entire Song of Ice and Fire series for an amazing read along. This book is MASSIVE and is filled with ALL THE THINGS so I don’t want to even come close to spoiling ANYTHING. Therefore, instead of a traditional review I am going to just provide you with my THOUGHTS on the book, the characters, and the epicness that is this series. *I am just going to say before we begin that I KNOW that I am not on the same page as everyone for the most part. I usually love the villains, and dislike the characters everyone else loves. *shrugs* I’m a Slytherin so one can only assume that I would be a Lannister as well. I am a huge fan of the TV show Game of Thrones, and I was worried that I would be bored by the first book because I heard that it was so well done that the book and show were extremely alike. I’m not going to lie to you, HBO did an amazing job with season one of the show, and they were very alike. However, I am so relieved and thrilled to tell you that the book was so much better. I absolutely adored the way that the reader was able to get into the character’s minds and know what they were going through. I especially felt this way about Sansa, who I had a very hard time liking in the show. As I neared the end of the novel, I really felt for Sansa and I was surprised at the strength that she was able to show, I will definitely look at her differently while watching the show from now on. Speaking of amazing characters, I LOVE DAENERYS. She is amazing in the book and the show and I WILL NOT SPOIL but WOW does she turn into a BAMF. Tyrion is fantastic, I love how witty and strong he is despite his disabilities. I also love Jon Snow with a deep burning in my being. Also Ghost. I can’t even. *dies* I actually really like Cersei in the show, I know, I KNOW, she is appalling and “evil” but I don’t care I think she is strong and awesome (creeptastic elements aside), and I was kind of sad that we didn’t see her as much as we do in the show. Eddard is, of course, loyal and amazing. Arya, pigheaded and strong, yet she still bothered me, though not as much as she does on screen. Catelyn kind of annoyed me, I know she is supposed to be strong, and she totally is, but for the most part I was questioning everything that she did. Also I was happy to see that I enjoyed Bran more in the novel, I think this was largely because of ALL OF THE DIREWOLVES, YO!! I hope to see a lot of growth with his character in the future novels. Anywho, in terms of plot, WE HAS IT. So many things happened and even though I knew most of them were coming I was still like “sayyy whaaa” at a lot of parts. I am absolutely giddy to see where things go. Many friends who have read the series in its entirety have told me on more than one occasion to not get too attached to the characters, and to be quite honest, I am equally excited and so scared to continue on. I will positively have hysterics if something happens to Ghost one of the direwolves. In short, I loved the book. Winter is coming, you guys, and I can’t wait for it.

If you have any interest in horror fiction, The Dark Descent is essential. In fact, if you're new to horror, don't bother with anything else. This compilation will not only introduce some of the best works in short fiction of the last hundred years, but it will do so with a clarity of vision that actually allows you to survey how far we have come and what remains to be explored. Each work in this anthology represents an incredible peak in style and expression that has never been topped regardless of its age, and the editor Hartwell introduces each of these terrors lovingly. I can't tell you how wonderful it was for me to find out about authors like Clive Barker, Robert Aickman, Oliver Onions and many others for the first time in this book. Enjoy the feast of horror!
