Just a lovely book about growing up, the loss of the security of childhood, friendship and family. Elise lives with her Aunt and Uncle, an orphan at 3 when her father dies (her mother died in childbirth). She is surrounded by loving adults and a friend who loves her and who she loves with no bounds. All this changes when they start middle school, the transition from fifth grade to sixth, much rougher than anyone would think. Bullies, being ashamed of friends, not knowing who she wants to be, Elise hates going to school. Surely, everything will change when she turns 12. But the day after 11 feels just like the day before, with one change: the first of 8 keys appear that will open the eight locked doors in the barn that may help her become the person she is meant to be. I absolutely loved this book- the feeling of shame when Elise turns against her friend, the despair of meeting her nemesis every morning at their locker, the teasing and bullying no one else seems to see or hear- it all rings so true. Elise needs to find her way and the love of the people around her help to form the path she will travel. It's also funny and light in a number of places and adults reading it will remember all too well the joy of playing in leaves and chasing each other with swords made out of branches. Kids may find a character that will help them find options to the horrors encountered in a middle school hallway.

** spoiler alert ** This would be a 3 3/4 stars. I enjoyed this story and found myself very involved and wanting more. The characters were endearing and easy to sympathies with. The author obviously had some very strong feminist ideas about marriage and the belief that it takes away freedoms, which I very much disagree with. It's not marriage itself that's a prison, rather it's holding onto a bad relationship and then binding it legally that's makes a prison. That's another whole subject of its own and only one point of view is presented on the subject leaving the other completely undefended. Oh well, it's her story and her views. My favorite parts of this book were probably the fights. I also loved Po and Katsa's conversations when she uses her mind to talk to him. It was still a fun book to read and it was refreshing that this book, like so many modern books I've read lately didn't turn into an environmentalist book, what a relief!

One of the reasons I'm not always a fan of series or trilogies (especially those with thick tomes) is that the writers often begin to repeat themselves, characters and/or plot don't develop in the same way as a stand alone book, and I get bored. Ness has outdone himself! I'm not bored by Chaos Walking. In fact, I'm running to get the third book to find out how this all resolves itself. I really liked that Ness develops Todd and Viola in this novel, and the reader can see the ways that the events in books 1 & 2 have changed them. Ness has Todd and Viola narrate the novel. It's great to see the same event through two sets of eyes. The novel is just as much a character study as it is a fast-paced, plot driven novel.

After she is kidnapped, sophie discovers the truth about what is going on and she doesn't accept it easily. I loved the setting of this story, I do feel it would have benefited from a little more description of the surroundings to help set the scene better. At the beginning we where led to believe that Sophie was an academic, putting all her energy into her studies in order to run from the pain of her past and Adriano is running from the choices he made that inardvertantly led to his exile. In Sophie's case it almost feels like an afterthought, I did like that she had a negative response when she discovers her lover spends time prowling the jungle as a Jaguar. It's not a common occurence in pnr. The addition of the mercenary shifters to the mix, kidnapping Sophie and attempting to get the stone for themselves was a nice touch. I would have liked this part of the story to be a little longer & I did get a little confused as to who was on what side. A couple of extra scenes would have avoided this. Although being book 2 in the series I don't feel as if I missed anything by not reading Mercy (book 1) but I do feel as if too many questions where left unanswered by this book.
