A cozy read. Lots of chuckles, especially at the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Tim - so familiar, their little disagreements and the way Mrs. Tim handles them. Lots of different characters to get attached to - I believe there is at least one more book, if not two, so I'm quite happy not to have to say goodbye to Mrs. Tim yet.

I definitely gave some thought as to how long I thought we would survive after a nuclear holocaust. Luckily, we have an underground stream in our backyard and enough food in the cupboard to last at least a few months (all the Joneses have read it and have contributed to the cupboard).

I found this book so incredibly difficult to read and was a little baffled by all the accolades it has received. Very little happens at all and it is based primarily on the inner-life of one character which usually is fine by me, but the pace was so slow I simply failed to be brought along. Took me weeks to read this, an absolute chore.

AMAZING! That's all I can say. They're a little sad, and they have some not-too-subtle religious overtones, but otherwise they are awesome.

I try to read this once a year. My goal is to get someone to read it aloud to me.
I loved this book. The writing is difficult at fist but addictive once you get used to it. The book is witty and humorous in a very dry and subtle sort of way. I really like the contrast between the development of the two main characters and the extremely flat and often over-the-top type-casts of the other characters. Apparently this book is also the key to understanding women, though I can't say it helped much in that area.
Despite all the controversy behind Nickel and Dimed, I found this book to be both enjoyable and meaningful. While the everyday actions Ehrenreich performs aren't necessarily exciting and suspenseful, they are imperative to the novel's message. The repetitive struggles the author encounters as she attempts to find lodging represent a growing problem we have in America. To fully understand this book, I had to look at Ehrenreich's experiences as symbolic of the working poor in the United States. Once I did this, I found Nickel and Dimed to eye opening and tragic. The commentary on the social issues- not to mention the economic issues- was raw and real. Anyone who has worked for minimum wage could relate to Barbara's experiences as a server, maid, or Wal-Mart employee. I thought this book did an excellent job in displaying the appalling circumstances surrounding America's working poor.

"Well, they say never say never and they're right," Karla wrote in her startling first letter to Stephen Williams. "Never in a million years did I think I would ever write a letter to someone from the media, let alone you who has condemned me so harshly." Thus began one of the most controversial correspondences in Canadian history. Karla picks up where Williams's first book on the case, 'Invisible Darkness', left her, painting her nails in her cell in solitary confinement in the gothic tower of Kingston's Prison for Women. After testifying against her ex-husband in 1995, Karla's life in prison was soon going to take a very different, dramatic turn. With a thriller's pace, 'Karla: A Pact With The Devil' charts the inner life of the world's most notorious female prisoner. In Karla, Williams lets Karla and the other key players speak for themselves. And what they have to say will surprise, horrify and enlighten."
