I really enjoyed reading this book. But it was with this book that I realized that Dan Brown was a hack. The oddly ethnic romantic interests, the awkwardly academic subject matter, the 100 word chapters, the cliffhangers of goosebump-ian proportions. I was exhausted by the end. I picked up a third of his books (Digital Fortress I believe) and I honestly couldn't finish it. I got about a third of the way through and I had to quit. I was just too frustrated. It pissed me off.

I gave it four stars because it is closer to a four than a three, but it's still not quite a four, for me. It is well-crafted and was a page turner, and I read it quickly, but I never quite got pass the whole premise that the "powers that be" decided that love is the root of all the world's problems, and so decided to "cure" it. Perhaps emotion in general. Also, if I read about one more boy with a "crooked smile," I'm going to scream.

I only read the abridged version, but warning, don't just buy the cheap-o paperback at Barnes&Noble, research the best translation, it can change your reading experience!

I've always had fond memories of Gatsby from high school literature class and over the years I've wondered whether I'd still enjoy Fitzgerald's style today. I found out the answer to that query while reading Tender is the Night. I do. Fitzgerald has a wonderful ability to develop characters that feel true and that are engaging to observe. Fitzgerald never seems to cast judgment on the decisions or actions of his characters and I find that refreshing and real. Of course Fitzgerald's writing is elegant and beautiful, but it is his treatment of the lovely, flawed people he creates that makes me a true fan. Time to reread Gatsby, I think.

I love that this historical fiction has a foundation of truth. To think a small town would willingly close itself off from the world to prevent the spread of plague is a true wonder.
