This book describes the culture of a nomadic African tribe and how the arrival of the bookmobile changed the balance of their society. The characters were interesting and the plot kept my attention throughout.

This book made me teary. No book has ever made me teary. I plan on reading it again for details, because I will admit it was confusing to follow - particularly if it's not read all in one sitting. You have to read actively to "get" this book, but it's so worth the work.

I read this in Spanish many years ago. I found the history of the Dominican Republic fascinating and loved the story. Vargas Llosa is an excellent storyteller.

Very good.

Kinda funny, but the movie was better. Plus, I bet this dude is making up half of the stuff anyway.

I think I stopped reading this book. I just couldn't get into it. I will try again though. I think I was in the mood for a different type of book and that is why I stopped reading it.

The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe is a book that imagines would happen if a relatively isolated community were to suffer an outbreak of a new and unknown virus. How would the government react? How would members of the community deal with the situation? What’s nice about the novel is that because the story is set on an island, quarantining people actually becomes a plausible solution. When that happens of course, emotions get heightened and the best and worst in people are brought out. Although Crewe escalates the situation gradually to increase tension, I never felt a sense of urgency to turn the pages as quickly as possible. Part of this was because of the slow pacing and part of it was because the book was narrated in the form of diary entries to Leo, Kaelyn’s ex-best friend who we learn a little about but only appears right before the abrupt ending. The entries were written obviously after things already happened so it felt a little like I was reading about Kaelyn’s past. This sort of made it hard to completely connect with the characters, and made me feel as if I was watching the action from a distance.

This book was one of the most original and well written fantasies that I have read in a while! It has everthing a reader is looking for. Rich descriptions, a gripping plot and characters you don't forget.
I devoured this book in a weekend. I have a toddler so that says A LOT. A light, delicious read and chock-full of terrific sounding recipes that I can't wait to start testing. Highly recommend!
