I adored this book.

** spoiler alert ** Having seen all the films and read all the books, i found this disappointing. It was quite dull and not very well informed. There were a few facts that were actually wrong, and vague mentions of people who were perhaps mentioned in background passing in the books. e.g. '*name* - student sorted into *house name*' The other problem i found with this book is that all the information comes from the first three books. People like 'Luna Lovegood' aren't mentioned, even in passing and random things such as sweets that can be bought at Honeydukes are. The time-turner input isn't much helpful either - 'Time-Turner - a necklace with a hourglass on it.' It doesn't describe what it does or how rare they are. I understand that this would be a spoiler for those who haven't seen the films or read the books, but surely anyone who buys the Encyclopedia would have done so? It's well seen that this book doesn't go into detail about any characters and their parts in the Harry Potter series as you would expect an Encyclopedia to, when you see under 'Malfoy, Draco - Slytherin, student at Hogwarts'. I would have enjoyed an Encyclopedia that covers the main points of the Harry Potter books, e.g. 'Longbottom, Neville - whizz at Herbology, slightly lanky and clumsy, faithful Griffindor.' It's disappointing to find such a juicy character as Remus Lupin and find that all this book says is 'Lupin, Remus J. - Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in Harry's third year'. It mentions nothing of him being a werewolf or of his friendship with Harry's father and godfather. The same goes for Harry Potter himself...his entry? - 'Potter, Harry - a young boy who unexpectedly finds himself at Hogwarts studying wizardry.' Overall, as a massive fan of HP, whether in film or book, i found this so disappointing that after the first page i skimmed through the entries and found myself put off by the numerous '... sorted into an unknown house' and lack of detail about very strong, intricate characters. Not a book for the die hard fan.

I'd read this before 1998, but that year I read it in my junior English class. Although we were obviously studying about the racial subtext and all that stuff, I must say I like it because it's a flat-out good read. The characters are (for the most part) entertaining, the plot moves along, and the writing is some of Twain's best.

"unforgettable climax???" i have forgotten it and i have read it twice. i never did "get" this book. i did not find it scary, even in the "cerebral horror" sense, and i want to know why, please.if someone could explain it to me, i will be waiting by my computer.
I loved this book!

This was such a disappointment for me. I'm a huge fan of the franchise, but I felt like Becky was a little too static -- and a little too selfish -- in this latest tome. Kinsella's fast-paced plotting and believable slapstick makes it worth reading if you're a fan, but I would have applauded some more character development.
I'll admit that I'm not a fan of Haruki's work so this review might be biased. I find this particular book's reputation to exceed its actual quality. That is not to say that it doesn't have its merits. It's beautifully written and holds a lot of truths the way a good book should. Its plot is unpredictable and it's easy on the eyes. The characters, especially Nakata, are imperfect but manage to be endearing. What I take issue with is Haruki's writing style. Whether deliberate or otherwise, I find that he states the happenings rather than reveals them with the fanfare of a wand-wielding magician. He lays his cards on the table in a neat row. Some people like that style; I apparently don't. What appealed to me the most, however, was his reoccurring theme of 'connections'. Everything in the story is related. The characters are interlinked in fate whether they realise it or not. I believe a revisit will unearth even more of such 'links'. I also appreciate the little life experiences he weaves in his works. In conclusion, I'm drunk on fatigue and this is a badly written review so if you're a fan of his, you'll like this. If you're new to him, I suggest picking up another novel of his.

!!!!!!!!!!! The ending of this book, oh my! I hope it's not who I am dreading it will be, there are tons of different scenarios running through my head but I have this sinking feeling that it will be who I think it is :( This series is blowing my mind! lol Really, I never see any of this stuff coming, it has completely kept me on my toes the entire time. I have no idea where it is going, nothing has been predictable, and I cannot get enough. This is definitely one I would recommend!

This is good. Lying is better.
