This gentle read is a gem. Especially in this hi-tech era, it's a pleasure to read a book written in the form of long-hand letters between gentle people. There are no abbreviations or email slang. A book about perspectives from survivors of World War II I would definitely recommend.

I often buy books just because the pocation is exotic. I know that's shallow but it's true. I bought this book because I love Hawai'i and I love reading about Hawai'i. It was not as descriptive and atmospheric as I was hoping and it's got a few rough spots because it's a first novel but it was still a fun book. Madinger is a retired Honolulu cop, so his story and characters have some authenticity to them and that helped the book a lot but his development of the story was missing something and his transitions were a little jarring. In addition, he had not prepared the reader for the ending. Now I know we all like to be surprised by authors. That's why people read thrillers and mysteries but when the end came, you wer eleft asking yourself: "Where did that come from?" A good surprise ending usually involves the reader being able to think back to all the subtle clues he missed and then it makes sense to hum. That's not the case with this book. I do think this book had promise and I think his later books are probably better. What was wrong with this book can be fixed with practice.

Such a beautiful book. I was not expecting it to be what it was, but it ended up being the begining of what will be an epic story. I'm so glad there is a sequel planned because this is the most AGONIZING cliffhanger I think I've ever read. Sylvi is such a sweet character, and is not your typical princess. She'd rather be outside doing things the others are doing. She's also very tiny compared to her family, which is a humorous sore spot for her. But the show stealer of the book is Ebon. He's so funny in his comments and mannerisms. When he first started prancing around I could picture it clearly. That's another wonderful aspect of this book. The writing is so vivid I could picture everything as if I was there. I struggled with the pegasi langauge as Sylvi did. I could see the caves, the palace. Everything. I don't know how I'll be able to stand the wait for the sequel.

Fabulous book! Mr. Childress took a serious topic - civil rights - and made it absolutely rivetiing and threw in some great fun by his amazing character driven action packed novel. I've hardly ever read anyone that can draw a character as he can and I appreciate his ability to make civil rights in '60's in, of course, Alabama, so accessible in a novel form. Kudos to him! I plan to read more by this amazing author. (The movie is good too!)

I found this book to be useful when I started learning OOP. But after having pursued OOP diligently over the past few months, especially with Ruby, this book teaches things just WRONG! I've learnt that OOP needs to be learnt by following one simple (well, not quite) concept - abstraction. It's the heart of OOP. Objects are an abstraction on Procedural code based on real life examples of abstraction. Classes are an abstraction on Objects. Not the other way 'round. This book really teaches Class Oriented Programming. Worse yet, concepts are explained based on their implementations in the popular contemporary languages. That's wrong. The approach should be to teach the OO though process and then adapted to the implementations. I can't recommend this book anymore. But what's a good alternative to start off with OOP? I think I'll just have create my own.

Because I can't stand all the scandalous things I keep hearing about James Frey, I'm glad this was an ebook exclusive and thus easy to avoid supporting, because I so adore this series.

After my delicate neuronal structure had been completely altered after hearing the first Ramones album, I quickly grabbed this book at the library, the Edgewater branch, ahhhh, home, memories, reading this book in about 3 days, The life of a 13 year old boy

An interesting look into the events leading up to the discovery of DNA. The book is as much about science as it is about the personal politics in the academic scientific field and about the personal life of the author during those years. The style of the author is amusing at times. I can't believe I missed the chance to meet him when he came to town. I guess we don't see enough of the human side of scientific pursuits. That's why books like this one are important as they show more of that side.
