I really like this story, but of course I do, because it's Mercer Mayer! His illustrations are always so wonderful because there are little touches and details everywhere that kids DO see and appreciated, and I appreciate as well. Plus its a good thing to add in a Fairytale program since everything else is so Princess-centric.

James Patterson’s ‘The Beach House,’ has nothing in it profound enough to be a picking point. But this seems to be the problem for this flat and unmoving work, that doesn’t resemble the reputation that the writer has acquired from classics, such as ‘Kiss the Girls.’ ‘The Beach House’ moves steadily through the story with no real fault, except that it is mostly predictable and nothing really exciting is going on. But there is a point between sections where a vague chapter or two tells us some sort of plan is being made, and then, right in front of us, the climax is being thrown full speed. It didn’t make a lot of sense to me at all. There are some parts of this book I really like. The Sarajevo Haggadah is an actual 600-year old illuminated Jewish manuscript, saved from looting and bombing by a Muslim archivist in 1996. This novel is an attempt by the author to explore and imagine the history of the book itself starting in the present day going backwards. Much of the historical detail is based on in-depth research of the manuscript, and the author has seen the manuscript and worked with the conservators of it, which is quite an advantage. The story of the Haggadah continues beyond the story in this book. The national museums, archives, and libraries in Bosnia have closed down due to lack of funding, and right now the manuscript (hopefully) sits in a safe place behind a locked vault of a museum without any staff or open hours. I like the vibrancy that detail brings to the novel, as if all of it might very well be true, and some of it is! Not as successful is the character of the conservator - I liked her in the first 50 pages back when I speed-dated the book, but her story soon got to be so unbelievable and ridiculous that I found myself racing through the present day sections to get to the historical fiction bits. Her mother, her unknown father, her relationship, working in caves... all just a little too dramatic, also unnecessary. The story of the haggadah is interesting enough. It doesn't need embellishment! I think this addition makes it read more like a beach read than it would have had the potential to otherwise. Perhaps that is a Brooks level, not having read any of her other books, I couldn't say.

Entertaining historical fiction for the Anglophile. I was surprised to find how much of it was based in true historic events. I was disappointed at the end of the book ... perhaps because the author felt constrained by history.

I picked up the Sparrow again looking for something to read on a recent flight. I thrilled to discover that the book loses none of it's charm the second time through. It's still a great page turner while remaining to be thought provoking - a hard to find combination. Part sci-fi, part theology - great book!

This memoir is, without a doubt, one of the most fascinating accounts I’ve ever come across. A woman narrates the story of her peripatetic childhood and life with her two liberal, free-thinking parents who instilled in her and her siblings all the love and self-confidence a child could ask for, but who denied them basic essentials like food (their mother hid chocolate from her family while they were all starving), a comfortable home (the children slept in cars, in cardboard boxes and at one point had no plumbing or heating in the ramshackle house they called home), protection from some rather dubious characters (the father would bring the author to bars so she could distract the men with whom he was playing and betting on a game of pool, thereby winning the jackpot money he gambled...and it was his daughter's money to begin with) in an effort to avoid the rat race and not feel hemmed-in by the trappings of the typical American life. You end up with your own interpretation of whether or not the tale is a cautionary or inspiring one. It was absolutely mesmerizing.
