This book tells the story of how Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Another entertaing, absorbing book from Ross King.I thoroughly recommed this, also.

Excellent upper elementary school novel. This is a Virginia Reader's Choice book. It revolves around a great mystery and has some excellent characters. Other themes family, fitting in, teasing, etc.
It was a little slow going at the start, but man did things change fast. What starts as a sweet book about a storybook southern childhood, suddenly and unexpectedly changes when a sinister new character is introduced and starts to reek havoc on the lives of every character you'd grown to love. Ras is the most believable villain I've encountered in a book in a long time--he's dark, evil, and just when you think he couldn't get much worse, he does. The Lake/Moses family is lovable and warm, and you'll find yourself wanting nothing more than to be invited to dinner at their house. I was drawn to and repelled by the light and dark sides of this story, but the duality of good and bad was maintained without becoming mundane. Ultimately the book was heartbreaking, uplifting, and beautifully written, and it made me remember the magic of childhood, and how quickly things can change.

The strongest element of this book, by far, is the voice. It's told in a kind of pidgin english. I'm not sure if the author was shooting for memesis, or if he was taking gross artistic license, or (most probably) a little bit of both. Whatever the goal, the impact is twofold: it restricts the level of complexity of thought/perspective, but it allows wonderfully impressionistic images and reflection on the action. At it's best, it's a kind of dreamlike poetry. The story itself isn't very engaging.
I laughed at the crazy and cried at the sadness. It's hard to think many people actually go through this! Makes me happy for my life.

People keep recommending Allende's novels to me, but after having read Daughter of fortune, and now this one, I am starting to lack enthusiasm. This was really not as adventurous or mystic and magical as stated on the cover. I also doubt younger readers would like it. The plot is predictable and the characters obvious and clichéd. As a next Allende read, I'll try my luck with Paula, that ought to be good. If not, I give up...

I quit because the facts weren't terribly interesting...
I'm a sucker for a murder mystery. This one is set in Hawaii. The author grew up in Honolulu and spent 30 years in law enforcement. The story rewards the reader with sights and sounds of Waikiki after dark and the backside of the title's neighborhood, Diamond Head. The plot rings true and the resolution is worth the read.
This book was so sexy and compelling. I LOVED it.
