writing style a bit tedious at times, but the book was enjoyable as a sort of historical fiction. i did read it in 2 days, so it was somewhat compelling

I started this years ago, but my original copy was a damaged one from India, with pages missing and out of order. Luckily, I recently found a near-mint hardcover in a Seattle used bookstore. Not quite as amazing as Interpreter of Maladies, but still a fantastic collection. It has fewer stories, but the last one is novella-length, and might be my favourite. Everything great about Interpreter of Maladies can be found here as well.

Rather flimsy for an Ender book. But it was nice to return to Battle School, however briefly.

A few years ago I did a workshop with George Ella Lyon at a Barnes and Noble. It was an amazing experience. We wrote our own I am from poems and talked about her writing process.

Hilarious - more so if you've studied languages. I'm not sure I would have thought it was so funny if I hadn't spent years studying German.

I enjoyed the story of Bod that Gaiman included in "M is for Magic" and was looking forward to this book. I wasn't disappointed. I admire the storytellers who can just make something up that's never been made up before (at least, not to my knowledge), but keep it so well-grounded in reality that you could imagine the story happening somewhere out there, not too far from home. It's also always nice to have another underdog/unwitting hero to cheer for.

Broken Bones, Mended Hearts A quick study in Hurt/Comfort. GFY, HEA Short read. Noah (Owl)-Has been crushin’ on his best friend Mark since he was six. Mark- Noah’s best friend since they were six years old. Always there to pull Noah out of a bind. Noah wakes up in the hospital in bad shape after an assault on campus. Mark is there for him and wants to know what happened but Noah refuses to say. Flirting with the wrong person can get you two broken legs and a broken arm. Talk about bad shape. Noah finally tells what happened thinking that Mark would be disappointed in him. Mark is a true friend, who is holding something back too. After a quick kiss to his lips, Noah is stunned by Marks action. He’s the gay one, not Mark! Mark brushes it off by saying that he wanted to know what it felt like. But Noah wants more. He’s had fantasies about his best friend for a long time. Hannah, Noah’s sister, is like a mother to Noah. She’s on her way to take care of him. “You know her,” Mark said before chuckling, successfully pushing away thoughts of exactly why I needed to talk with the police. “She won’t give up until you’re back at full health.” “I know. I think she has some kind of mother complex,” I said with a laugh. Not that I’d change anything about her— not much anyway.” –Broken Bones, Mended Hearts Noah gets that second kiss and Mark wants to have a little fun for a while. Mark discovers that he wants to get serious about the relationship. Noah’s all for it. They become a couple, tells the family about it, the family is very supportive of it, and they live happily ever after. This was a nice getaway for me today.

I really enjoyed this book. Well-written, suspenseful and bloody without being gratuitous, with shades of McCarthy's "No Country For Old Men" without being a rip-off. It was well-paced with characters of surprising depth considering the short length of the book. Highly recommended.
