In Hovering Flight is a crisp fictional memoir about an ornithologist, an artist & environmentalist and a poet. It is a multi generational story of a father's, mother's and daughter's struggles to balance their love for one another with the demands and passions of their work. In The Sociological Imagination, C. Wright Mill's distinguishes between 'personal troubles of milieu' (such as individual job dissatisfaction or marital strife) and 'the public issues of social structure' (such as large scale underemployment or increased divorce rates). He challenges social scientists to examine individual experiences within the context of social relationships and to consider how individual biographies combine with history. Warm, compelling and compassionate, Joyce Hinnefeld's first novel more than meets this mark, enriching our lives with creations of her own and enlarging our understanding of the world around us. Hinnefeld's ear for social context is spot on.
I can't say this was my favorite Cinderella story. It was a nice story with a strong female lead, but it was predictable. It was a quick read with a fun concept.
This book should be read by anyone who would like to take a global look at United States history. Although most of the vents will not be foreign to many of us, the way in which it is presented will be a little different. Howard Zinn flips the usual "history written by the winners approach" and forces you to learn about history from the losers point of view. From the Spanishs discovery by the Natives who had their hands cut off to World War 2 from the Germans point of view, this book in a non stop read and I recoomend it to anyone who considers themselves American.
It's all in e-mail format. It's a quick light read and perfect for the beach.

Great resource
A story told in four sections, each told in the first person by a different character, and set in England during the Reformation, this is a gripping tale and intriguing mystery. What you think the story is about after reading the first section mutates and evolves to a quite surprising ending. If you like mystery, beautiful prose, and fascinating characters, pick this up. You won't easily be able to put it down.
the writing was good, but it didn't get me to care. at all. i read about a third and then skimmed the rest. for whatever reason, totally boring.
DNF - For now. I really like Kelley Armstrong's writing. I've read a few books in her adult paranormal series and read and loved her Darkest Powers series of which this new series sort of spins of off. Although I got about half way into this book though I found I got kind of bored and moved on to other novels. I thought I'd eventually go back to this one, but after a few weeks I'm not feeling it anymore. The book is written with the same simplicity that readers saw in the Darkest Powers series, but what saved those books was the immediate jump into the action. From the first chapter there was an eeriness that gripped me as a reader. In The Gathering things start slowly, events unravel at a tortoise style rate and as far as I got they didn't pick up any. I liked the main character, Maya is interesting and strong and sure of herself and I really liked her relationship with Daniel. In the possible love triangle between Maya, Dan and Rafe I'd be a Dan fan. Overall, the story was interesting and had potential, but I think the simplicity of writing is definitely geared towards a younger audience although I read YA quite a bit, I just couldn't get into this book the way I wanted to. I might try it again sometime, but for now I'm moving on. Interesting story though, which I'm sure will evolve into something high paced eventually.

Dervla Murphy is one of my favorite travel writers. This time she tackles recently democratized Romania alone. But at the beginning of her trip, her rucksack is stolen off the train by the police. With only a plastic bag of notebooks, pens, and a bottle of duty-free Scotch she plows ahead. In this drab depressing country she manages to meet a lot of locals but hurts her back in a car accident in which the driver dies. She finally flies back to London to properly see a doctor and returns with books and proper gear. I'm in the process of re-reading so I'll write more later...

--had a couple smiles in it; I wouldn't rec. it, yet in that noisy dr.'s waiting room, I was darned glad to have a book to read, regardless.
