Another strong novel my Robert. I know he aims these books for teenagers, but I still love the storylines and the writing. The pages just fly by! The only issue I really had with this book was the ending that just sort of tapered off unlike the rest of his books which generally end with a BANG followed by a slight conclusion. It's not like the story didn't have it's highlights (it did), I just wasn't expecting pages of nothingness after the major plot line had ceased. Even with this, I'd still highly recommend the book to others and can't wait until next year when the next book in this new and exciting series is released!

Theodosia's parents run a museum of antiquities in London. Her parents really enjoy bringing back artifacts from Egypt for the museum's collection. What they cannot see, however, are the black magic and curses that are ingrained on these items. Theodosia can. Set just before WWI, this book shows what happens when Theodosia's mom brings back the Heart of Egypt, an object of black magic so powerful, it could bring down the entire British empire. Can Theodosia stop it? I was laughing out loud quite a lot at the beginning of this book. It wasn't quite so funny toward the end, but if it had continued in that vein, it would have been my pick for the Maine Student Book Award winner.

Ballpark Mysteries #3: The L.A. Dodger by David A Kelly is a fun romp through Los Angeles and Dodger Stadium. The book follows Kate and her cousin Mike. They are in L.A. to visit Kate's dad, a scout for the Dodgers. But when they meet him at the airport, they quickly notice that something is not right. Her dad explains to them that mysterious things have been happening, and because of this he needs to keep a close eye on his scouting notes. Kate and Mike jump right into the mystery, trying to discover who the mysterious Dodger is and how they can stop him before her dad gets into any trouble at work. This is a great book for kids that love anything about baseball. The illustrations are fun and the book also includes some fun facts about Dodger Stadium in the back. I'm definitely going to share this book with my nephew--he'll love it. *Reviewer received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads

Wow. Lisa See absolutely never, ever disappoints. She is an amazing storyteller, and ‘Shanghai Girls’ is an amazing story. I think I forgot to breathe during the last twenty pages. What a great movie this novel would make. I’d line up to see it. Recommendation: For a stunning, compelling and captivating read, put ‘Shanghai Girls’ at the top of your to-read list. 2nd best-read of 2009

Our first book club book! And only two of us read it for the first meeting - a few more for the second meeting. No one really liked it. Slow, felt like cheever was trying to squeeze a novel out of a short story.

It's my current bathroom read. One chapter for every long sit. ;-)
What a splendid effort! What a truly wonderful thing to do, telling the tale of Beowolf from the monster's point of view! And what a monster. You'd be grumpy too if you had his life. A huge hurrah for Gardner. A triumph of a tale.
