This is better than Secrets of Eden, but not much. It is the story of a hippie dippie midwife who has to perform a C-section on a woman who is ostensibly dead and is charged with practicing medicine without a license. The plot line was predictable and the characters were not particularly appealing. The author did deal with some of the controversies between midwives and physicians, but readers should take note that this woman was a lay midwife. Today's midwives are nurses with masters degrees. In the past midwifery was an apprentice like vocation and while these women may have been empathic practitioners, they are simply not the same professionals who practice today. All this is neither here nor there, I am pretty much done with this author. I find his writing boring and ungrammatical and in need of editing. He takes on social issues in the same way that Jodi Picoult does, but he does not write nearly as well has she does.

** spoiler alert ** Janet Evanovich is back on track! This latest installment of her Stephanie Plum series is hilarious, witty, fast-paced (I finished this book in about 6 hours) and a great return to the Stephanie books we all know and love. The bumbling mishaps, fouled up tags, confusion with the two hot men in her life, and the destruction of all her possessions including any car she comes within a mile of (except of course the Buick, but four cars including two of Ranger's and Lula's precious Firebird, met their demise this time around) are so much fun to read. My only complaint about this book, and it is more a moan than a complaint, is that Steph didn't get down with Ranger again, although she is weakening. Their back and forth flirtation and will they or won't they is driving me insane. I love Ranger so much more than Morelli so no other reason than a man of mystery is extremely hot! The storyline of this book was intriguing too. The idea that Ranger's immaculate business could be corrupted and only Stephanie could help him figure out who was trying to ruin him, was great. Also the side story of Lula witnessing a murder and then being a target herself put Steph and Lula in more outrageous circumstances. I laughed a lot reading this book. Stephanie must have the patience of a saint to put up with Lula, Grandma Mazur and Joyce Barnheart. And I love the title fitting in with the BBQ angle in the atory. Can't wait for the next installment. I need to see if Ranger finally breaks Stephanie. :)

I am currently reading this book by Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert. Although it's non-fiction, Gilbert's style is easy to read and he is actually quite funny. Gilbert does a good job at taking a stab at why we believe certain events will shape our future happiness -- describing both physiological and evolutionary reasons, as well as cultural contraints that shape our expectations. But, in the end I feel that much of his theories are based on some unrealistic assumptions. This may look like a self-help book from the cover, but it is not and should not be read in that context; if anything, it's simply an interesting and amusing take on the human psyche.

Worth reading! At points it was frustrating reading what was going on especially with situations that there is obviously a better route to take. Abbey Johnson talks about that in the very beginning of the book. The old saying "being an observer in someone else's life always makes you critic" applies. Reading her story there were multiple times I was shocked she thought the thoughts she thought and took the actions she took!

A very quick book to read. The tales themselves aren't that great but the comments by Dumbledore (and JKR)are. I liked the comments after 'The Hairy Heart' saying that there is a self help book for witches and wizards called 'The Hairy Heart' for those who have troubles with commitment.
3.5 stars I so loved the romantic gesture the hero made in this book! Sigh...

Loved this Gothic page turner about an old woman who is asked to recollect her days as a house maid at the grand estate of Riverton, where a famous scandal occurred during the 1920’s, by a young filmmaker.
