I was really enjoying this book until the middle when a surprise guest appears. It didn't ruin the book for me, but it upset the flow enough that I was distracted through the remainder of the book. I think the idea of disability, acceptance and love - key themes in the work of Coetzee is interesting to read - how he creates situations to explore these issues. I also liked that perception was tested and evaluated.

I love Eileen Chang and was so excited to read the first installment of her two-part autobiographical novel written in English. The first 100 pages dragged for me. It seemed like she spent too much time describing the personal lives of the servants in her household. It's interesting stuff, but I think she wanted to replicate The Sing-Song Girls of Shanghai, which she spent years translating. Once the story got going, however, it was a fascinating look into her troubled childhood. I enjoyed reading about her mother and paternal aunt, who sailed off to Europe for several years. Her father and step-mother were other colorful characters. I'm always game for anything set in pre-WWII Shanghai and in that respect, this book doesn't disappoint.

** spoiler alert ** The beginning was a bit confusing. I didn't understand what I was reading. I had to re-read it a couple of times, but once I realized what the author was trying to say it was great from there. I wish the ending would have continued on a bit longer. I felt that it stopped to soon and could of used more details on how the family's life was after she was captured.

Gideon on the other side, is wildly attracted from Jess, but he will do anything to destroy the friendship between them. Only an uncontrollable situation will free his desires and from that moment on, Jess will be his and his only. He will protect him and will mastered his body and soul in every way. An interesting vampire tale where the vampire character, Gideon, is not so perfect like most of the vampire hero we know. A very convicting observation on human behavior and the weaknesses common to Christians. Unlike the reviewer who came away with the idea that Lewis meant to portray us as "meat puppets", I see this as a warning and wake up call for me to be more aware of my sinful tendencies so that I can strive to overcome. My husband and I read this together. He has a smooth FM radio-guy voice, so doesn't come off very convincingly as a demon.
