This is a great novel-- almost a historical novel. Earl Swagger is a wonderful character and Hunter weaves a great story in Havana. Well worth the read.

The start about the court case is interesting, with norman mailer and ginsberg speaking up in defense. The book achieves very poetic and disturbing passages and then a lot of blathering on and it can get slow and boring in sections, there is little linear glue that holds anything together. the book stands as a testament to censorship being overthrown but remains not so much a literary classic as a literary mess that was drug addiction etc.

I loved this book! Like Johanna had mentioned in her review, when I just began to read this book I saw a Geisha as a prostitute but all they have to endure and another word for Geisha is "artist" and the name does fit. I love this book! Can't wait to see the movie -Please student

Let me start this review by saying that I did read about 120% of this book. I've tried to finish it unsuccessfully five times. I made it the farthest this time, 52% to be exact, but still just couldn't do it. I reached the point where I was avoiding reading the book, and that means it's time to give it up. There are some great phrases. Updike hates stupid people, respect for that. It's just not a good book. It's just not.
