A moving book made all the more poignant by the tragedy of its author's death in Aschwitz and the history of its publication. Full of perceptive insight, it is an insider's account of the impact of the German invasion on the various stratas of French society in 1940/1. It is a painful lament but not without its moments of tenderness and humour. it is all the more effective for not demonising the Germans and leave one full of regret for the further planned five sections. The appendices of contemporary letters in this edtion add to its forceful impact.

I just finished this book, and at the moment, feel unequal to critiquing it. I will say that I found a great deal of food for thought, and leave it at that. Of course, I recommend it, particularly to those interested in questions of the soul, of purpose, of life, and of time.

This book was fairly depressing. The whole time. Not really the best book for a dreary day. It was intriguing, though.

** spoiler alert ** Why oh why does Suzanne Collins have to make us suffer like that!!!!!!!!! District 13 is still in existence and there are people there!! No more District 12???? Gale!?!?!??!?!??!?!?!??! Peeta has been abducted by the government!?!?! Katniss and Peeta have to freakin go back and relive the Hunger Games!?!?!?!? Man, I wish that my brain worked like Suzanne Collins. The only thing that bugged me was that I was getting a City of Ember vibe toward the end.... Amazing book!! Can't wait for the next one!

Yeesh, this cover is terrible. This looks the male equivalent of a Candace Bushnell novel.

I am struggling with what to rate this book. My book club picked this book and I don't think I would have read it otherwise based on the subject matter. I am trying to figure out how best to describe my feelings about this book. The author has an incredible writing style that totally transports you to this back woods town in the Ozarks. The catch is that I don't want to be there. Ree is just your typical teenager growing up in poverty, trying to raise her brothers and taking care of her crazy mother when her father suddenly goes missing. Now the family's future is on her shoulders while she tries to find out what happened to him in this close-lipped community of meth cooks and dealers. This book was so hard for me to read. It was just so depressing, from the winter landscape, to the sad living conditions in this poverty stricken town, to the foul language, the ignorant backwoods characters and the struggles of the main character Ree. I guess what was so depressing is that places like this really exist, people really live like this and children are subjected to the horrors of this lifestyle. In that aspect the author did a wonderful job of submersing this doctor's daughter into this nightmare of a town. If you want to be in hell on Earth, Daniel Woodrell has taken you there.

This is the romantic tale of an English lass and an Highlands laird. The story reminds me of those classics by Kathleen Woodiwiss... AND... I didn't want the story to end. This is a not-to-be-missed book by Julie Garwood.
