This book felt like Salman's version of The Phantom Tollbooth The Phantom Tollbooth. Haroun's father, Rashid, is touted as the greatest story teller in all of India, until his mother runs off with their next door neighbor, a sniveling clerk who asks, "what is the point of stories if they aren't even true." Soon after, when his father steps on stage at a political rally to tell stories in support of a candidate, his story well dries up and for the first time in his life, Rashid can not speak. With his father's reputation, and possibly their lives, at stake, Haroun undertakes a journey to find out where stories come from and to find out how to restore his father's power of gab. The story seemed overly simplistic at time but there are clever plays on words and puns sprinkled throughout the book. This is not a book to read for the plot. I did love one of the lines towards the end. Haroun tells one of his new friends that a happy ending in real life is impossible and his friend replies: "Most people would say that nearly everything you have experienced these past few days is impossible. Why take issue with this specific impossibility." All in all, it is a fun, quick read, not nearly as complicated as some of Salman's other works. It is a beautiful mental image of where the source of storytelling is located.
We love the cheeky little gorilla.

Wow, I feel like I've been reading this book forever now, I'm on page 605 with 192 to go - but it's worth it! The imfamous Becky Sharp is the most self-serving heroine ever, but it's hard not to admire her guts and determination. Thackeray reveals truths about humanity that are still relevant today within the amoral world of 18th-century Vanity Fair. If you never read it in high school, read it now - it's definitely better from an adult perspective.

The book tells two compelling stories, one of an older man who has no family and can speak to cats, and the other of a 15 year old boy who runs away from his father to escape his destination and search for his long lost mother. Their journey takes them to strange places, and their paths sneak between reality and the "other world," so quickly sometimes that you are not sure what is reality at all. Both parallel stories are mysteries, in which the characters speak very little and every sentence is a little cryptic. While I am not entirely sure I understood everything that was happening, the characters were so likable and their lives worth following. While I wouldn't say the story is gripping, it is very enjoyable to read.

Amazing title. One of the most interesting books I have ever read. This is Nibley's philosophical view of the metaphysical to the extreme. Almost the entire book is speculation. The way he thinks about the creation, space, physics and how they all relate to the temple is unreal. Amazing.

Loved it! I learned so much old testament history. It took forever to read, but it was really interesting.

Carol recommended this book.
The erodic nature of the novel gave me many cherished head-aches. I found it absolutely hilarious in a very witty and highly claustrophobic way. Every time I re-read this novel I find some other code which I can never seen to figure out. Except now I'm well versed in hexadecimal and binary sequences so perhaps my next read will provide more insight. I'd be willing to sell my black and white copy to anyone interested.
