Fascinating study of power, and in particular, the maintenance of it. However, one gets the feeling that this entire work was really just a gag, sent by one very pissed off Florentine to the ruler who exiled him from his home. Hmmm...

I'm really enjoying these old, public domain books by P. G. Wodehouse. In this one, an American writer of music for musicals, George Benson, falls in love with the daughter of a peer, Maud Marsh, who jumps into his taxi trying to get away from a man chasing her (who turns out to be her brother). George prevents the man from looking in the taxi by knocking off his top hat. Although she leaves when George gets to his hotel, George hunts her down and finds she is the daughter of Lord Marshmoreton and lives in Belpher Castle. George rents a home near the castle and tries to get an occasion to see her. Maud is trying to get in touch with Jeffrey, a man she met in Wales the previous year and with whom she is in love. Because of this, Lord Marshmoreton's sister Caroline has made her a prisoner in the castle. There is some confusion in the family that George is this man. The book is amusing and a good yarn with some great characters.

A little bit slower for me, but I still loved it. Probably my least favorite of the series.

This book was well-written, but as in many romances was full of completely unbelievable characterization. I still enjoyed it, but I wouldn't seek out the subsequent novels unless Amazon also makes those freebies.

1. Erin Kellison's writing is The Awesomesauce. 2. This is a sequel that doesn't suck. 3. Custo is The Yum. No, seriously: Custo's The Yum. The first book in this series, Shadow Bound, blew me away with just how dark it was for a Paranormal Romance. I loved the terrible, beautiful, hopeful world ... I loved the characters ... and I ABSOLUTELY wanted more. Shadow Fall is slightly less bleak, but just as incredible. It begins with Custo. He was tortured to death in Shadow Bound and is now chilling in Heaven, much to his surprise ... and complete aggravation. Before killing him, Spencer let slip about another traitor at Segue, and Custo CANNOT REST until he warns Adam, meaning that HE WANTS OUT. Luckily for him, Shadowman - who started all of the S#%T on earth when he fell for a mortal woman and temporarily abandoned his post - wants in. Fast forward two years. Enter a ballerina whose dancing opens the way into the Shadowlands, one newly fallen Custo, one stupendously angry Shadowman, one heavily pregnant Talia, one good and cold and highly stressed out pile of Adam, and - well - a very hungry Wolf, of all things, THEN LET THE FUN BEGIN!! o_o Oh, wait, did I mention that Custo is The Yum?! Since he was literally tortured to death, he's - you know - tortured. He also believes that he's not worth very much of anything and that he OWES IT ALL to Adam, including his life, and that He. Ruins. Everything. Oh heck, he's just Too Real. As for Annabella, well, she's his perfect match. I actually really liked reading about her, too, especially since - although constantly protected by Custo and the other Segue men - she's strong and wilful in her own right. I also enjoyed the Giselle stuff; I don't know shit about ballet, but Erin Kellison makes it interesting. And the ending - OHMYFREAKINGGOODNESS!! Paranormal Romance or not, I'm just a sucker for an ending that's perfect exactly because it isn't. For one, it sure as heck makes me want to read further in the series to find out what happens next to Adam and Talia and Shadowman and Zoe and Annabella and Custo and ... yeah, you get the point. Anyway, I loved it. Also, I can't wait to read Shadowman. Now, what to read next?! Shadowman or Lothaire?? Shadowman or Lothaire?? Shadowman or Lothaire?? Shadowman or Lothaire?? *brain spasms* *brain dies*
Wish I could have given this book 3.5 stars.

You can always tell a romance novel from the 80s because the hero is always really pushy and demanding, and he'll be like, "You hate me and I hate you, but we are sleeping together right now whether you like it or not," and the heroine says, "No! No! Well, okay," AND THEY DO. Skeevy! This is one of those books.

Very poetically written but it makes it quite hard to read and distill the essence of each "teaching". Still the wisdom is there and is quite simple and timeless.
