Before reading this book, all I knew about Molly Brown I had learned from the movie: "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." Based on that portrayal, I've always been a bit puzzled as to why she was so great. She seemed like a loud-mouthed, new money-flaunting social climber. So Iversen's premise intrigued me: that there was much more to Molly than the popular myth has claimed. As it turns out, Iversen delivers. Starting and ending with the story of Mrs. Brown on the Titanic, she lays out a new picture. To start with, Margaret Brown did not go by "Molly." Ever. Yes, she was very outspoken. No she was never a waitress in a bar. Yes, her husband struck it rich when one of the mines he owned hit gold. No, she never hid the money in the stove only to have it go up in flames by mistake (ok, even I suspected that one was made up for the movie.) The portrait that emerges is of a fascinating, forceful woman with a soft spot for those with less. Before they were even considered wealthy, every Christmas Margaret and J.J. donated hundreds of pairs of shoes, clothing, and food to the mine workers under their employ. And once they were rich, their philanthropic net just kept extending. Margaret's personality and drive made her very good at fundraising--nearly all of which she did for charitable causes. As for the "social climber" bit? Iversen points out that the Brown were not trying to be accepted by Denver society. They were Denver society. Nearly every edition of the newspaper at the time included something about the Browns, often full-page spreads. Invitations to their home were prized. I'm glad I read this. I can finally understand why Maragaret was someone worth all the hype. Just treat the movie like the piece of fiction it is, and you'll be on the right road to appreciating the real Mrs. Margaret Brown.

I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads, and I am very happy that I did. I nearly always enjoy the chance to read a book that I don't think I would have normally picked up. This book was a complete joy to read. The story is engaging, the storytelling is smooth and wonderfully well paced. The book follows Lanie Price, a society column writer, and her journey through a mystery that begins with the kidnapping of a local singer in 1920's Harlem. Ms Price uses fantastic detailing (although not so many descriptions/details that it becomes overbearing) of the time period to entice your mind into the era so that you feel you are there within the story. The mystery has a few twists, as any good mystery should, but some twists are definitely unexpected and all are gratifying - never cheap. Although it does cover some dark subject matter, the story manages to use these dark elements well so even when the plot is shocking it is satisfying at the same time. I really look forward to more Lanie Price stories, and I enjoyed this book enough to buy the first Lanie Price book Darkness and the Devil Behind Me.
Weak.
complete crap.
With horror films becoming ever darker, full of twists and gore, it is easy not to be shocked by these tales if you're not in the right frame of mind. Subtle (and almost unfinished some of the time), I found that the joy in these tales came once I had finished. Imagining the different outcomes for the characters and wondering what I would do in their shoes. I recently saw Twisted Tales- a stage adaptation at the Hammersmith Lyric and was surprised that they hadn't attempted to modernise them at all. They remained exactly as they are, a quaint, slightly chilling collection of stories that you can easily remember and repeat, like ghost stories told around a campfire.

This is Frank Miller's best story other then his retelling of Wolverine. I will probably catch a lot of flack for that because of The Dark Knight, 300, Sin City crews but, it's true.

I was flattered by the dedication for obvious reasons: To English teachers of America, doing good work every day, with admiration and affection from an old students. It is an amazing collection of poetry (a good bit of which I had never read before).
This is one of my favorite books of all time!!!
