The most chilling line in this entire book is the final one. In 2004, I saw a documentary about the Lost Boys of Sudan and was completely disgusted with myself and with the world for not making a big deal out of the plight of the Lost Boys of Sudan...I wonder if, because I already had that revelation watching the documentary, this book didn't transform my life as it seems to have for so many others I know who have read it. Also, I was really confused about how much of what I was reading was real (not that it matters) - When I went to buy the book at Borders, I couldn't find it under biography, then realized it was filed under Fiction. That was a weird way to begin. There were parts of it I loved, and definitely parts of it that must have been a LOT more heartbreaking to experience than it was to read about (something about Eggers' undramatic writing tone throughout this book)...how much of it is Eggers, how much of it is the real Valentino? It's a question I kept coming back to, especially when it seemed like artificial events or writing devices were being used. This book had a powerful impact when I first began reading it where as I walked the streets of cities, I wondered to myself how many people have stories like that that I'm passing without a thought. And like I said, that final line leaves you with an incredible sense of responsibility. A sense of responsibility we should probably feel whether or not we read a book like this.

Alternate military history. And its pretty dang technical on the military side of things. Too technical to be fun for a layman like me. Also, many of the chapters concerned specific battles like Guadalcanal or midway which I don't know much about (and therefore, different permutations of those events dont resonate with me since I can barely tell them from the actual event). I skimmed those chapters. The best chapters were the ones dealing with theatre wide changes, or changes in grand strategy. So, the Japanese invasion of Russia, India, California, and Australia were the best. I'd rate those chapters as 4 star.

Hui!

While I initially found the format a bit contrived, I gradually warmed to this collection stories depicting small-town life in the summer of 1928 for Douglas and his brother Tom. I particularly loved the stories surrounding the older inhabitants and their memories and ideas, passing on to the next generation. Definitely made me yearn for the probably-fictional simpler era, wishing I, too, could preserve my childhood summer days on a shelf like so many bottles of dandelion wine.

I seriously put the first book in the series down, hawksong, for months because I could not get into the first few pages but to my utter happy amazement this is one of my all time favorites. The story of their love, or lack there of sometimes, and overcoming all of these obstacles between their races was amazing and well written

Very enjoyable story about Rory Swenson who is FINALLY turning 12! At 12 she can get a cell phone, pierce her ears, go the the mall with her friends and no parents, and on and on. Rory can hardly wait to grow up, but Rory finds that growing up isn't always as easy as it sounds.
