The Werewolf is a cursed animal. A supernatural being who does not come into his existance in any other manner than a tragedy. Glen Duncan ramps up the drama and tragedy in this tale to Shakesperian proportions. This is not a tale of teenage lovelorn where the Lycan runds around with his shirt off showing off his pecs and poor acting skills. This is old school and perhaps that is the main reason I loved it. A Werewolf tale of debauchery, darkness, human and wolf and enough blood to drown it all in.

This was not the book i thought it was when i picked it up. It starts off slow. We're introduced to Todd Hewitt, our protagonist, as he takes us around the town he lives in. We're told about how Todd is the youngest boy in the town and about 30 days away from becoming a 'man'. We meet Todd's talking dog Manchee. And then something interesting happens. And then the book takes off. And doesn't stop running. Ever. This book was seriously a roller-coaster. Every new event that happened, every new reveal was exhilarating. The book went in directions i was not expecting, taunting me with secrets that aren't explained until later. For a story that starts out about a boy and his dog it quickly takes a turn into some dark territory. It's about a lot more than a boy and a dog, a lot more than a small town with some odd quirks. For a book that is apparently classed as 'Young Adult Fiction' i was incredibly impressed by Todd and Viola; they are exceptional characters. They could be pugnatious or difficult but never stupid for no reason or misleading just to get the story moving. The story didn't need any help to get moving, trust me. I thought this book was amazing. It didn't get bogged down in cliches or fall into typical genre traps. It also had no regard for proper spelling or sentence structure, but it was entirely forgivable given it's reasons. It was new and refreshing with strong characters and WOW WITH THE CLIFFHANGER ENDINGS! Every chapter i just had to keep reading because something amazing had just happened. (view spoiler) There should be more books with this much dedication to good story-telling.

Touching book about four generations of Japanese American women and their struggles with cultural dictates, parental relationships and their personal fights for self expression. "A tear runs down my face and I stick out my tongue to catch it; the first one tastes bitter, but they get sweeter until their wetness is like milk." Julie Shigekuni

a very good book and gives you a path to self reflection.
I think it's safe to say that this book saved me from a lifetime of palm-readers and zodiac killers. Completely set me straight. I used to believe in aliens, y'all.

Read in 1999 for a book club. This is about infidelity in marraige. I just remember that one of the ladies in the book group was totally upset to think that this could ever happen. She had never before considered the possibility of a cheating husband. She was sweet, but so naive!
The whole book was really good and something that I could definitely relate to but the last chapter was by far my favorite.
Gawd, this was depressing. Not that I have a problem with depressing books, either: in this case, the prose was plodding and fantastical, leaving one with the feeling that in order to like the book, you must see the protagonist as some kind of darkly romantic badass. If you are unable to do so, you're screwed, buddy! Note: I felt much the same way about (the movie of) Requiem For A Dream. In both cases, the mean opinion (get it, get it?) seems to be much higher than mine.

As the mother of a daughter with a genetic heart defect, I found the premise really interesting and thought-provoking....engaging story-telling, though some of the relationships (ie the lawyers) were a little annoying and unnecessary (but not enough to warrant less than 4 stars).
