Very interesting for me when I learned that this book plays in Slovenia. This way Paulo Coelho's books never get boring as they always tell their stories in another country. This young girl has no problems really, just seems a bit bored with life. But why the hell does she want to kill herself? Good job she fails but what happens to her in the nuthouse is just the most amazing story. The title might indicate a sad and depressing story but it is really the other way round.

I know, I know, it's supposed to be better than Tom Sawyer. I agree that it's deeper, but it's just not quite as much fun.

A fun book, a combination of dark underworld, magic and a bit of history and geography. Would like to have seen more of the latter two, but it was only in the middle of the book that I learned that the story existed in another medium first, so the book is essentially a screenplay. I haven't seen the tv series, but will do so, as the book presents much visual information that seems to be a recording of another medium, as opposed to something imagined initially for print/text. The main character, likeable enough, never seems to get fleshed out though. One learns about some of Richard Mayhew's fears, tribulations and general life, but missing is more exploration into his thought process, history, upbringing, relationships, etc. that would give a better picture of who he is. Again, owing to the original medium I think. But some of the details of the story are good/interesting, specifically the idea of a denizen of London Underground named "Door" who has the unique ability to open things, this is a rich metaphor and nicely used. The Underworld's citizens' relationship to rats is another surprise, with the rats holding an esteemed, almost venerated position, contrasting to their reviled position above ground. All in all, a good read, though a bit gloss and seeming to need the television series format to flesh it out.

I loved the first and second book this one just wasn't as good. It was hectic and all over the place (not in a good way!) and difficult to follow. She gives you all the answers you were waiting for just maybe not as in depth as she should have. A little disappointing :/ *Update* I think maybe I should have waited on the review a little longer. I don't think I gave the 'story' the credit it deserves. It didn't end happy and wonderful and so I was disappointed. It did hit home though. The story wasn't meant to be a fairy tale and I shouldn't have expected it to end like one.

Detective Harry Bosch, who has recently returned to the force after a try-out at retirement, is still haunted by some of his open cold cases, particularly the death of Marie Gesto, over a decade ago. He checks the case file out periodically and while he has it out this time, the Echo Park bagman (named because he was caught with garbage bags of body parts)is caught and eventually brokers a deal naming the Gesto murder as his. They call on Bosch to help verify the details of Raynard Waits confession, which includes a field trip to the grave site of Gesto. Somewhat predicatably, things go south and Bosch is caught in the middle of quite the mystery. This is only my second Connelly novel and they are certainly solid reading, especially if you enjoy a good procedural.

It could have been better, but there were too many ridiculous and/or absurd things happening.

This book was an interesting read and there were gorgeous photographs. The growing tips were a little sparse for a beginner. There are 2 pages of tips and then each box in the margin with a difficulty rating, indoor vs. outdoor light, hardiness, moisture and growing medium. I mostly ignored the growing tips and enjoyed reading about these unusual plants.

A great mystery for kids, keeps you wondering if it was real or imagined right up to the end.
