As a landmark in the history of the English theater, sure. But as something that has withstood the test of time and still resonates today, not so much. Marlowe is the warmup act for Shakespeare; he may have broken new ground but it was Shakespeare who mastered the territory. Faustus partially suffers from its source material and partially from Marlowe's pen. Just as the eponymous Faustus begins to get interesting and introspective, he is immediately distracted. He's basically Hamlet's antithesis. Faustus doesn't agonize over his deal with the devil nor does he relish in it. He rides a wavering middle line that fails to impress in either direction. He doesn't go deep and philosophical and yet with all his powers all he manages are pretty trite parlor tricks. So where's the drama? I'm still trying to figure that one out. The final scene is more dramatic but again there's just a lack of depth, of remorse, of the horror of realization that he could have been saved. Stuff just happens and it's mildly entertaining. Faustus as a character is mildly interesting but fails to really engage. In Marlowe's defense, he was still a young, developing writer whose career was cut short by an inconvenient murder.

Love! Don't get me wrong there were parts I had to muddle through, like politics and battle scenes which I struggles to comprehend but it is well worth it to get to the good parts. Plus these 'boring parts' really are necessary to the storyline. Even though I did not agree with the actions of most of the characters I grew to like them. The only beef I have is that through the whole book Hugh Le Despenser's family stands by the fact that he was a good man who made bad choices. This may be so but the author could have portrayed examples of that more when mostly she goes in detail of the awful things he does. This was a good size novel which I am always thankful for. Can't wait to read more by the author.

Diehard Baldacci fans will enjoy this latest book starring the characters from "Camel Club". Not as fulfilling as some of the earlier Baldacci work, if you're looking for a quick thriller, this may be for you.

I guess I'm just not as into teen romance as some people. The story itself wasn't very appealing, but I can tell that the plot did take some work, and poor Emily is a character that we can all relate to. In that aspect, I suppose I do have to give O'Connell some credit.

5 of 5 stars First page and I was already completely devoured. First page and I was already smiling and feeling so giddy knowing I'll be seeing a totally awesome story. First page and I had fallen already in love with this book. Shatter Me went beyond my expectation and surely did surprise me a lot. I was stunned the first time I saw the book trailer and I was more stunned when I started reading and saw the first line. I was so flabbergasted on how incredibly astounding and fascinating this book is! I was consumed and captivated by Tahereh Mafi's brilliant writing. It was very unique, exceptionally wonderful, and utterly original. I loved how imaginative she formed words into sentences and phrases to convey Juliette's thoughts and feelings. It was really mesmerizing that it effortlessly earned a lot of love from me. This novel is packed with so much exciting twists and surprises, thrilling action and totally swooning romance. I adore Juliette. I see how strong and beautiful her character was even with all those things that were done to her. Yes, sometimes she is so willing to give up, thinks she's a monster and deserves to die but that's because her heart is clean. She doesn't want to do horrible things. She thinks she rather die than to shatter her dignity and ruin someone else lives. She wanted to be loved, to be accepted, to be touched by someone and to touch someone yet she doesn't know if it would ever come to her because of what her touch can do. Until Adam. Adam is a very wonderful character. He's one of those swoon-worthy characters I would love to see! He's gorgeous and strong but definitely loyal and caring. I love how he and Juliette connected. I was worried and confused just like Juliette during the first parts as to what Adam's real purpose is. But once it was finally revealed I was...I was so so happy and relieved. There are so many wonderful moments between them that I can't help but smile and swoon and smile and swoon and smile and swooooooooon while reading it. I also love the the snippets of the past that made the characters well developed. Tahereh Mafi did a great job by giving all characters their highlights even with not so many exposures and you'll still find yourself liking them. Though in case of Warner's character, I did hate him a lot. He's cold, manipulative, seeks power, and pure evil. However he was also having issues from himself, secrets about his family, his mother. And I kind of understands the causes of his actions. In the end I actually felt sorry for him. Aside from Juliette and Adam, James and Kenji and Castle are my favorite characters. James is Adam's younger brother. He is so adorable. I like him the first time he appeared (Though I think it was a bit wrong timing at that time. If you read this you'll know what I mean. LOL.) Kenji is really funny and I love how he and Adam fights and banters. I didn't really trust him the first time he appeared but in the end I was really surprised with the revelations and realized that I do like this guy not to mention he's also good looking! And yes! Castle, I feel that his purpose and compassion were very genuine that when he explained everything I felt so reassured. Everything in the end was so so interesting and exciting and fascinating! I wasn't even expecting that. The last part left me so excited that I am tremendously craving for the next book! Seriously, I need more more moooore! Book 2 hurry up! This book is flat-out gorgeous and downright awesome! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this! Read this! This review is also posted at Book Overdose
It kept my interest, but was not fully satisfied when I finished it. Definitely disappointing. I really didn't like the ending.
An incredibly funny book that teaches a very valuable lesson of love who you are and don't try to be someone that you are not.

One of the best thrills for me is finding an unexpected great book at the library. This story is a fresh spin on the subject of guardian angels. A subject I tend to find more plausible, comforting and safe than astrology or tarot card reading. This is the story of a young woman who dies and comes back as a guardian angel. The writing is effervescent, haunting and thought-provoking. Contrary to other reviews the ending doesn't feel rushed and follows in the thread of all the other unexpected moments. I read this slow because I'm always looking for excellent writing and a story that provides the reader with something out of the ordinary. As far as I'm concerned this book delivers and I'll look forward to the next novel from this self-deprecating author who states in her acknowledgments " her chocolate dipped gratitude." Bravo!
