This reminds me of Angela's Ashes. Just not the same level of poverty. So good.

this is the book that made me quit reading anne rice. when did you stop reading anne rice? a real fall from tale of the body theif, which i loved. when i was 15.
I listened to the audiobook format of this well-written memoir, and got through it faster than I usually do with audiobooks because I was so enthralled. I've heard the author's story on NPR, so it's not like I didn't know what happened in their story, it was just that some of the things in here struck rather close to home with me. I told my mother to pick up a copy of this - It's the exaggerated version of us, I told her. And really, reading it brought forth all sorts of emotions, and memories of things I haven't though about in over a decade.

Title in German: Die Meisterin Sonea suspects Akkarin to be involved into the murder of people by Black Magic. And involved he is – but not in the way Sonea thought. When Sonea learns the true reason why Akkarin works with Black Magic she wants to help him and begs him to teach her... but the guild gets wind of it and both are exiled into the wastelands of Sachaka. The last showdown with the enemies was over a little bit fast and I really thought "What? That was it?" and I would have wished for a better ending – there were possibilites to make that happen (I´m admittedly a sucker for happy ends). The epilogue lets the door open for a sequel although I´m not sure I´m interested enough to read it without Akkarin in it. It´s not a waste of time if you read this trilogy, it´s quite entertaining and exciting (sometimes) but if you don´t you wouldn´t miss much either.. small book, short read, lots of insight. more on the "way" of archery. interesting illustrations and textual descriptions that actually make sense (think of reading how to do dance moves w/o pictures and understanding). gives a single way to view and encourages you to find your own.
Quite an educational book. Just enough science to be interesting and just enough punny humor to avoid being dull. Can't say I read the whole thing since I skipped all the recipes, skimmed some of the more sciencey parts, and ignored a few entries on uninteresting topics, but what I did read (probably 90% or 95% of the book), was good.

I don't think it is overstating that the biggest challenge to robust Christian commitment in America today is its fascination with Eastern religion, often morphing on American soil. Alan Watts was a popularizer of Zen Buddhism in the 60's and 70's. This book is a compilation of lectures that Watts delivered on the topic of meditation. As you would expect, there is a great deal of practical wisdom and social critique. The non-striving, non-manipulating approach to meditation is instructive for Christians as well. Of course the appeal of adapting Buddhism to American consumerist culture is that you can pick and choose the parts of that tradition that best works for you. Ultimately this book has good things to say, but doesn't present a compelling vision of the Spiritual life.
An indispensible, highly readable resource. Wonderfully detailed illustrations and bits of trivia, all related in pleasant, conversational style.

Love the book. Definately a good mystery. Although there were lots of horrifing, and graphic details, they made the mystery that much more suspensful and terrorfying.
