Another quick, enjoyable read. I figured some things out early and was surprised by others, and I'm kicking myself that I don't have Mockingjay to hand given the ending. I've seen other reviews complaining about the language, but it doesn't bother me; it's readable and I'm not expecting, say, Cat Valente's level of word-love in a book like this.

It's like From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler and Da Vinci Code had a really cute and deeply-sensitive child. I love this book. It gives kids and me permission to believe that things happen for a reason even when everything that "proves" that is unreasonable.

My interest in Anthropolgy is from the perspective of trying to understands patterns of the whole system: technical and social. Again, I look to books published long ago for some answers. This book was first published in 1963 and might be a little hard to find.

Here Joan Didion chronicles the year following her husband's sudden death, during which their only daughter is hospitalized and in and out of comas/the ICU. She turns to literature. She researches. She fixates on the moment of death. She cycles back. She replays the scene. As others note, Didion has led a charmed life and ,yes, her nonchalance comes off as smarmy. But she is not exempt from loss. She is honest here; the result is sometimes haunting. I particularly like how she captures the triggers associated with grief (e.g., a crossword puzzle answer can be a landmine).
I think it's my favorite study yet...
I have just finished reading Dirty Little Angels and found it to be pretty readable and even nicely written in parts (although some metaphors are over used - are there really so many people in New Orleans with a rats' nest for hair?). The story centers on Hailey (16 year old girl) and her older brother, getting themselves into trouble while their self absorbed parents are looking the other way. I would recommend this title as a good one for older teens who are reluctant readers, as it's short and easy to identify with the teenage protagonists. There is violence and some fairly negative sexual experiences(probably fairly realistic for sixteen year olds with poor self esteem!) but nothing I would have a problem with my own 15 year old reading.

If you have ever seen the television show "Frontline," this is like "Frontline" in print. . .very educational. A really good companion piece, or maybe prologue book, to Bob Woodward's State of Denial.
Sincere thoughtful and smooth-talking: just how I like it. Favorites: The Truth On The History of Poetry Joan Armatrading New Love Roots Couples Reality USA (Favorite?) Nicholas in the Park

Me encantó!!!!
