I added this book to my Goodreads queue because I needed to add a debut novel and someone mentioned it was interesting. I don't even remember who recommended it, and that's a shame because this is a wonderful YA book. Katie Kittrel has a lot going for her. She's smart, pretty, and an incredible swimmer. Unfortunately, her family is totally screwed up. In fact, her parents basically give-up on trying to be parents and ship Katie off to boarding school in West Virginia while they try to piece her crazy brother, Will, back together again. At boarding school, Katie has the opportunity to create a new life for herself, but soon realizes that she can only keep her family secrets hidden for so long. Many of the scenes in Breathless were so real and so poignant, it hurt to read them. Jessica Warman captures dysfunctional family dynamics and nasty power struggles between women perfectly without going overboard. Even though Breathless tackles issues of classism, religion, homophobia and friendship with brutal honesty, the story is so compelling, it's impossible to look away.

This was actually the second attempt I made at reading this book. The first failed about fifty pages in: I simply couldn't buy the premise. Apparently there are some things that are "obviously what happened" in Gregory's brain, but that seemed like huge, wildly improbable conjecture to me and many other readers. I don't want to go into it in detail, so as not to spoil the plot, but basically, Gregory took historical events and assigned feelings and motivations to the major players that seemed completely unrealistic. The first time I tried to read this, I just wanted to throw it across the room. But then The Last Boleyn came out, and I wanted to read it, but I have that thing about reading series in order. So I decided to give The Constant Princess another try. This time, I forced myself to forget that we were talking about those Tudors; I pretended they were made-up characters. It sort of worked, most of the time. It worked enough for me to conclude that once I got past the historicity issues, it was actually a pretty good book. Gregory's a good writer, and does very well at evoking the atmosphere of Tudor England. I eventually got caught up enough in this atmosphere to end up enjoying the book. So I guess I'd recommend it, but it will probably seem better to those of you who don't know or care much about the historical Tudors. Oh, and seriously, I'm tempted to buy Gregory's books just for the cover art. Gorgeous.

i used this book for my masters thesis as a bridge between poststructuralist thought/psychoanalysis and postcolonial feminist theory. everyone in the world should read this book. stop being ignorant already.

fascinating idea and written in first person made it really compelling, but at the same time limiting in the perspective because I always wanted just a little bit more. I think I may read more by Daniel Keyes.

This was a surprisingly good book! Don't let the title keep you from picking up this book! The only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 4 was that I felt like the author needed to put a little more background in the book regarding the bad guys motivations or make it clear to the reader that in the sequel, you'll find out more about what's going on with the bad guy. Throughout the book I kept thinking to myself why is he doing this? Is he possessed or what?

I read this when I was like 11 or 12 soooo I have a feeling I'd have a different perspective on it now. But I remember enjoying the book, though it was emotionally difficult at times.

I am starting a series of books by John Lescroart. Since the author is supposed to be a legal thriller writer I though it was worth the effort. The first is Dead Irish which, from what I can tell, is the first with characters Dismas Hardy - a cop turned lawyer turned bar tender (amen!) and Abe Glitsky - cop. These characters seemed to pop up every time I tried to read Lescroart (though I never finished his books) and so I thought I would go back to the beginning. Dead Irish was not very action packed and the story was not captivating. I hope the second Lescroart book is better. I will give the author a pass since the book was written in 1989 toward the beginning of what looks like a healthy writing career. The book may just be my own disinterest but I found myself skipping a page or two when it got really boring and that is something I just do not normally do. So far I do not recommend Lescroart - at least not as to Dead Irish.
i saw this movie and then the book came out and i read and was like "ew". it was sooooo boring! not as bad as Johnny Tremain, but it was so boring and short.
