I really disliked this book. It in fact made me angry to read it or sometimes to even think about reading it. It started off with an interesting premise and interesting characters (which is why it got two stars), but about midway through I thought it all spiraled apart into ridiculousness. I know this book falls into the magical realism genre, in which I know who just need to suspend your disbelief, which I can do, but only if I feel like the magical elements in the book have a meaning and contribute to the story, not if they are just thrown in there to be surreal. There were so many elements in this book that were just plain weird...for example, Johnnie Walker (the whisky guy) who killed cats and collected their souls to make a magic flute (this was just one scene, it never really came back to connect to the story), fish and leeches raining from the sky, and Colonel Sanders (the KFC guy) also made an appearance and set one of the characters up with a prostitute. And then there were weird realtionships between the characters of the 15 year old main character sleeping with (maybe) his 50 year old mother. It's all so odd and I felt like I never understood any of the characters or the meaning of all of this random stuff. And then there would be random annoying many-pages-long philosophical statements from a character or desciptions of classical music that just were so boring and unconnected to the rest of the story and seemed completely out of place. So I definitely would not recommend this book. The only reason I even finished it was because it was the book for my book club that I just joined. And that's another reason it got two stars instead of one - some of the parts of the book were interesting to talk about to other people.

The premise of this book, that America may break up into smaller parts or get new states at some point in the future, is convincing, and perhaps seems more probable now than when it was written pre-real estate crash, pre-Obama. It mainly argues this by showing that many other countries have broken up recently and enumerating some of the serious difficulties America is having with Native American relations, immigrant relations, red state vs. blue state stuff, etc. However, the book reads like a series of factoids, and every sentence is in a different font, size, or alignment than the previous sentence, so it tends to read like this: BIG GIANT FACT (tiny little fact) Medium sized fact so as you can see... ANOTHER BIG GIANT FACT The books was more or less a list of statistics with very little actual argument going on. Plus, it was poorly structured. For example, the chapter on Europe was mostly about Canada.

The book was better than the movie. It was well written and I will admit that I had a hard time putting it down while reading it during my commute. Interesting topic, that's for sure.

I think if you're more familiar with New York City than you'll appreciate this book more than I did. Certain things were presented in such a way that I felt like I should know about it already and think how cool it is that this is how it's being presented! Wow! No... not really. While this was an interesting read it was also a confusing read. With so much going on at once and a lot of politcal jargon being used, it was very hard to follow most of the time. The characters were also pretty... blah. The characters were either too flat or too annoying to like any of them. Yet there was something about this book kept me reading. Something kept pulling at me and wouldn't allow me to just stop. It was slightly hard to focus, but I was able to keep getting back on track. Perhaps it's Woods skill as a writer, that was something that was definitely a plus about this book. So who knows if you'll like this book or not. Maybe you'll be like me and not be too fond of it, but still unable to put it down. Let me know. It's a toss up, who knows what you'll think.

so this book raised a lot of questions in my mind. the main character calla seems like a smart sure of herself smart ass but towards the end she loses the coolness factor because she becoms so unsure of herself.its kind of unsettling the way she changes characters so much. but the boys in this book made the whole thing worth it. theres ren who is overly protective and then theres shay who is the new boy in the hood and hes kinda corny but sweet and the witty banter in this book leaves alot to be desired. but back to the book. it was worth the read for the romance so read the book.

As a kid, I read this book at least 20 times. The book eventually feel apart and I lost half of it, but definitly a childhood favorite!
