Hell, it's summer and I'm entitled to some light reading, right? Exploits was just perfect. The main character is a Canadian boy who begins the novel pig headed, and selfish. He ends the novel only slightly redeemed, but by then the tone of self-congratulation is more ironic and easier to bear. The narrator's voice is engaging enough, but I found I was constantly irritated with his attitude. As the book progresses and the character grows, however, the jokes become much funnier and the book becomes a real joy to read.

I, like most, know about Mike Kelley because of the sleeve he did for Sonic Youth. The interviews are very "on-topic" and have to be re-read a lot (it's Phaidon) and the installation photos will give you the total creeps, as Kelley interprets your childhood, your dreams and your notions of self into a distorted mess.

The first paragraph is misleading--the main character is not as insane as it suggests. He is something more like "fragile" or egotistical, but he's mostly unsympathetic. I forget what happens to him. Maybe he gets married again or gets divorced again. It doesn't matter.

Dear Vikram, It's been a while since we last spoke. I hope you've been well. I am sorry I only gave your book 3 stars. Seriously though, wtf were you thinking? Do you remember my telling you not to name it Sacred Games? At least you didn't name it Almanac of the Living and the Dead (I think that was the title you originally suggested); we all agreed that that was too similar to Leslie Marmon Silko's Almanac of the Dead - although, now that I actual read your book, I can see where you were going. I think I still have your NYT Book Review article - the one where it was announced that you received a million dollar advance - stuffed in a drawer somewhere. Tell me again why any of this made sense? My respect for you is undiminished, but my understanding of your goals as a writer are thoroughly muddled now. I mean... you wrote a 900 page Indian cop thriller with an online Hindi concordance (which no, I did not visit). You are a strange man, if it's not too much for me to say so. If I do ever see you again, I will buy you a Diet Coke and I'm sure that I'll act incredibly and awkwardly apologetic, and it will be because I will be thinking about Sacred Games and how much I didn't really like it, and how that makes me feel guilty and sad. P.S. I hope it was an editor who forced you to put "To win is to lose everything, and the game always wins" on the back of the HC edition, because as a writing professor I'm sure you realized that sentences like that DO NOT MEAN ANYTHING and DEMEAN YOU AS A WRITER. Smarmy faux-koans are pretty much the worst thing you can put on the back of a book. To write a giant book about cops is to commit a crime of taste, and certain crimes pay you a million dollars.
