Not as good as the first book, but then again it's hard to follow up on near perfection... A sweet story that has some twists and turns that'll make your heart thump loudly in your chest. The focus is not as much on the romance in this story though which is both a relief because it means there is some actual plot, and also a bit sad because you never get that deep connection with the characters that you long for.

I have read this book before and I enjoyed it very much, but as the new book is out soon, I thought I would recap

This story really pulled me in, and I like how the author weaved the past in with the present.

Best book and movie! But the book is better. You should read the book before you see the movie. It gives you a better idea of what's going on and more detail a movie can't show you.

This one read a little too heavy-handed and rushed. It didn't have the delicate landscape+history handling his books usually have. Rumor has it that the hippie character in the book is based on Ken Kesey, who was a student of Stegner's at Stanford. While reading some sections of the book it seems like Stegner just wanted to get out there how stupid he thought Kesey was. There is, however, one really great extended scene in the book of a sprawling 4th of July party out in the countryside, made all the more sprawling and disorienting because the narrator gets too drunk.
Still no plot, but Cerebus is back from the abstract nether-world and once again surrounded by Sims fantastic characters. People talk, relationships form and are broken off, and its a good read.

This book is garbage. While the ideas are surprisingly interesting, it is so poorly written. I guess it gets two stars because I was entertained in the moments I could ignore the terrible writing.

A beautiful book, creating a picture of childhood in small town america of the 1950s, of race relations at the time, of people of godwill and of prejudice.

This is a good book, well-written, 'sounds' authentic, and moves at a good tempo. The idea - the story of the March girls' father during the time of "Little Women" - probably works best if one remembers more than just the names of the sisters. My only complaint would be that 3/4 of the way through the author introduces Marmee's voice and this is disconcerting - though understandable, as March is comatose at the time. I thought the voices should have alternated throughout the book, but hey, the author didn't ask me.
